We were very pleasantly surprised by the number of objects exhibited in this museum which traces the history of the island of Oléron.
The course is very interesting for both young and old, there are also games for children.
Then, the exhibition on Pierre Lotti was very interesting!
I recommend this museum

The museum has a fixed exhibition on the traditional economic activities on the island (wine, salt, oyster farming), local customs and culture and the politico-religious history of the island. Well made panoramic film of the island. A small, but very complete museum shop.
The first floor is currently showing a special exhibit on the history of maritime transport to and from the island until the inauguration of the bridge to the continent in 1966 (at the time the longest bridge in France). There is a lift for those who cannot climb stairs.

Museum really low interest. A collection of objects mostly without surprises, and with very little information.
Tip: Even if you are childless, ask for the playbook because it contains more interesting information than is displayed in the exhibition itself!
Like many we went on a rainy day for lack of better activity available to us, but it was really disappointing.

Conveniently located on the edge of the main town car park the museum deals mainly with local industry (salt/oysters etc) and island history. Staff are helpful and overall I'd allocate an hour to see everything on show. Check opening times (see my picture) but even if closed at lunchtime you can have something to eat in one of the nearby cafes while you wait.

A very attractive little museum that traces the history of Ile d'Oleron. Of course, one reason for being som attractive is the fact that Ile d'Oleron carreis a very long and dramatic history. The fight between the English and the French, the religious war between catholics and protestants, the changing fortunes of salt making and the formidable rise in oyster farming.
The museum is well laid out with explanations in French and English. And the welcome at the reception desk is very warm.

Small interesting museum on the history of Oléron. I recommend the guided tour, which makes the discovery more attractive. Thank you to Lola for the visit and the rest of the staff very friendly.

Great discovery, very interesting exhibition on the ground floor on the history of the island of Oleron. Pierre Loti’s exhibition allows you to discover the life of this colorful character.
