My husband and I took a side trip to Mount Vernon during our visit to see the cherry blossoms in D.C. and it was really great. As long as you get here as soon as they open (and try not to come during school vacation...More

Beautiful drive to Mt. Vernon, the history just surrounds you upon arrival to Washington's home. Be sure to sign up for a tour before arrival, and make the visit to the mill a part of the day as well.

Visiting George Washington's Mount Vernon was perhaps my favorite part of our D.C. trip. The grounds are spectacular, the view of the Potomac is incredible, and there is just SO much to see and learn. I could have spent an entire day there. However, we...More

Yes, it can get quite crowded with school groups and other kids, but this is a good thing. To learn about George Washington first hand is an experience that all school children should be afforded. Mount Vernon offers a behind-the-scenes tour, which is well worth...More

Privately owned and run well. Great experience for young and old. Remember to hydrate on the hot humid summer Virginia days. Everyone should go at least once, maybe once a year!

A trip around Mount Vernon is a serene walk in a beautiful place, but it can be hard to navigate in summer. Large tour groups descend on the place pretty much any day of the week, usually in the morning, making it almost impossible to...More

I took the metro to visit Mt. Vernon on Tuesday, June 12. (1.5 hrs from Gallery Place Chinatown Metro Station for $5 one way). Despite the parade and hockey crowd excitement, the transit was timely and easily negotiated - the bus stops were located just...More

If you care about history at all this is a day trip for you. The staff is outstanding. They dress in period clothing and answer questions. The house is original. The view is unbelievable. George and Martha are buried on site. It is a very...More

What a great place, but understandably very busy, although this was a quiet day. We booked an early cruise, which seemed a good idea. We went straight through the forest walk, farm and to the wharf and avoided most people. There were only a few...More

No dress code that I saw. I would imagine that shoes and shirts are required.

As far as I know, there will be only one photo op from the boat. That would be the front of the mansion. As for the boat, I know nothing. We took the DCTrails bus tour with Charles Smith

I think so. You will still need a ticket, and you won’t be able to go inside the mansion because that is done only as part of a tour. But you should be able to walk around the grounds and interact with the staff who are... More
