    Absolutely beautiful
we really enjoyed our day at Mt Vernon. It was very relaxing and a change of scenery to the normal Washington sites Day trip approx 1hr 30 travel time each way on public transport - Take the Metro to the Huntington Station. From there , take the Fairfax Connector Bus 101 to Mount Vernon OR we Ubered. It took 30 mins and cost US$45 Grounds pass $26 Mansion tour $2pp National treasure tour $10pp enSlaved people tour $0 Many other tours available Grounds passes include Mount Vernon's self-guided audio tour of over 30 locations in the Historic Area . We chose to just walk around and drink it in versus being wired up We entered at nine . Our mansion tour wasn’t til ten so we had an hour to spare. In that time we watched an info video then headed straight to George Washington tomb and the slave memorial. Also Had time to look at the old family tomb and slave quarters We then joined our mansion tour line at ten and waited in the shade til 10.20am. It’s a guided tour in the mansion and done in about 30mins We also did the National Treasure tour which in our opinion was a bit of a waste. Note this tour takes you on a longer walk and involves walking back up the hill unless you catch the shuttle back up . The shuttle takes you to the exit versus back to the mansion so make sure you have finished all the other sites and tours you want to do there is a cafe and restaurant there for lunch and a lovely gift shop

    Great history
Great history and the grounds are very walkable. The view from the porch is spectacular and I recommend doing the ferry ride for a unique perspective of the house. The only complaint I had was how rude a lot of the tourists can be. You are expressly told not to lean on the house or other buildings so they can keep them preserved and people just don't listen.

    4th of July fun!
We visited on the 4th of July, 2023. Myself, 15 year old son and 10 year old son (who has requested to "see where George Washington's bones are buried!" since he was 5!) Hot and lovely! There were a few hiccups in the schedule for the day however it was still amazing to be there. We did the grounds tour and the mansion tour. Generals Washington and Rochambeau addressed the crowd just before the daytime fireworks. What an experience for us, as we are from south Louisiana and our youngest is in French Immersion. Although he got very nervous when greeting the General in French, we lucked out in chatting and being there when he was there. FYI on the water stations: There are only water fountains so refilling water bottles is rather difficult. I have emailed to suggest this facility improvement. Lunch and parking on big event days are rather stressful if you are new to Mt. Vernon. Get there earlier, at least 30-45 min prior to the first event starting. We missed out on Washington addressing the troops due to lots full and the shuttle not starting until 10 a.m. The lunch situation: go to the restaurant earlier than normal lunch time or later. If choosing the food court, get in line to order, wait for food, then pay. Have someone reserve your table and be mindful not to just sit and chat after as seating inside on a very hot day is limited. The panini sandwich was delicious. You don't have to stand in the regular line for that. It's a LOT of walking so be prepared. Kids will melt down if it's hot. Don't miss out on the museum pieces! Also, there are free audio guides available! Don't pass up the chance to visit. There are renovations going on for the basement currently but nothing stopping the exploration. Plan for the day and weather appropriately because going back to the car for anything is a feat lol! We loved it here!

    Amazing views
Go out of your way to see this if necessary. We spent time walking the grounds and gardens before our tour time. Signs lead the way and give detailed explanation of each structure and area. Beautifully restored structures and of course the President's home. Sweeping views from the patio are amazing. Something about seeing where Washington passed away really did silence everyone as they passed by his bedroom. ASK questions! The guides were a wealth of knowledge on even the smallest of details regarding the workings of the estate and of course the history of the home and it's many visitors.

    Excellent historic property and tour
Our family very much enjoyed this historic site and tour. We spent about 90minutes here due to our travel needs, but a family easily could spent 3-4 hours. the docents were knowledgeable of the history and interplay of the property both to Washington's persaonl history, as well as the larger colonial and revolutionary period. Many 'original' items remain. George and Martha's tombs are on site. Excellent stop on our trip. The food court was surprisingly large and varied! If we had extra time we would have enjoyed the more in depth tour option.

    Historic Gem
We bought tickets in advance & everything went smoothly. The guides in the mansion were well-informed and knowledgeable about the history; they answered questions & were able to keep the group moving. We walked a portion of the property & also took a shuttle. Audio devices were available at no extra cost. Beautiful views of the Potomac as we stepped back into the 1800s. Worth the ride!

    Worth a visit for sure!
Loved our visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The tour of the mansion and grounds is just fascinating. We were there for about 5 hours which felt just about right. You definitely want to save time for the museum and the films they have there. The food court has reasonably priced food that’s surprisingly good. Lastly, if you love a good gift shop like I do, this one doesn’t disappoint. We went to Mount Vernon after a few days seeing the sites in DC. While you can take the bus and metro to MV, it was 2 hours from Silver Spring. We just took an Uber instead. The MV staff was so gracious and they locked our luggage up for us in the gate house. We took an Uber from MV to Reagan Natl Aiport. Order your Uber ahead of time as there wasn’t one close by. There were taxis sitting at the entrance to MV though so that’s an option. Anyway - MV is definitely worth a visit.

Great educational mansion tour and visit to the grounds of Mount Vernon
This past July I visited Mount Vernon with my wife, daughter and three grandsons. We had a great educational mansion tour and visit around the grounds. It was fascinating to see how Mr. and Mrs. Washington decorated the mansion. The grounds reflect the outbuildings that were needed to operate the farm. It was also enlightening to see the slave quarters with its bunks. I’m glad my grandsons got to see the first president’s home and got an idea about the operation of his farm.

    Beautiful mansion, grounds and gardens
Our US History Tour took us to Mt. Vernon, George Washington’s home in Virginia. We toured the mansion, gardens & grounds, the tomb of Pres. Washington and his wife Martha, and a memorial at the slave burial ground. The beautiful mansion has been preserved and maintained, and is furnished with artifacts from the time. There are flower gardens, fruit & vegetable gardens, and an experimental garden. Washington was very interesting in growing things and was good at it. He also designed many of the aspects of the home and grounds. This was a very interesting tour. I would have liked to spend longer there. There were also the Ford Orientation Center and the Donald Reynolds museum, where there were displays and information, food courts, restrooms, gift shops and other things of interest. There was also a movie, which we didn’t go to, preferring to spend our time seeing the property.

Everything was very well organised - it's a beautiful location. The grounds were very well-maintained with good signage and a lot to see. The staff were all friendly and professional, and the mansion tour was excellent. Allow at least 2.5 hours to see everything.

Did our own tour by buying a ticket for admission and using map and signs to walk through estate. Did not have tickets ahead of time to mansion, so arrived in morning to buy those tickets, which ended up giving us mansion time 2 hours later. Plenty of time to walk around rest of estate. Be aware lots of walking. Had someone with mobility issues so we did use a wheelchair that was available for not cost at location. It was a big help for this person, but hard for the person pushing due to a lot of hills. Be aware you can’t do the mansion if you are unable to walk upstairs.

As a history nerd, my dad and I recently returned from a Virginia Presidential vacation, and our first stop was Mount Vernon.

From the impressive gardens, to the outbuildings, to the visitor center, the entire estate is geared to tell you all about the Father of Our Country from his political and military career to his private life. The house is beautifully preserved and every room allows for a look at a facet of Washington’s life, including his deathbed.

The grounds also contain George and Martha Washington’s tombs and their original tomb which has been restored. The tour was very in-depth and always interesting, it gives you a great appreciation for Washington and what the earliest Patriots had to go through to build this great nation, along with now it still effects us today. I would highly recommend everyone visit at least once-you’ll be glad you did!

Well maintained and managed by a private group, there is more to see than just the home. Guides were pleasant and knowledgeable. The house tour isn't long but you see enough to be satisfied and the fee is very low. We also dined at the food court which was shockingly good and not RIP off priced like a lot of places that 'have you' sort of captive on their grounds. Seating is a bit limited during peak lunch. Free maps are provided and you can get an audio guide as well, but we found the signs sufficient. Some sights require walking up hills or stairs. We thought it was a great value overall.

The mansion tour is a must. All the staff were very knowledgeable, engaging, and willing to answer questions. The estate grounds are beautiful! There were several baby sheep that were only hours old, which was a bonus. The walk to the tomb of George Washington was past the house down a gravel walk. Several historic outbuildings. Beautiful views of the Potomac.

This was my first time visiting DC. I was visiting my son, who was recovering from an injury during deployment. We took advantage of this opportunity and explored it. My must was to visit George Washingtons' home. I had no idea how huge the grounds were. I love seeing how they preserved the house and estate. It was a fantastic experience. Expect it to be busy, but it's a must-see.

Grounds were lovely and the site was well curated with lots of historical info, sensitively portrayed. However, we purchased timed tickets to enter the residence and didn’t actually enter until 45 minutes later. We were standing in a long line waiting. Why have timed entry if we have to wait? MV should take tips from Monticello (Jefferson’s home) for doing it right.
