Montpelier is the lifelong home of James Madison, fourth President of the United States, Father of the Constitution, and Architect of the Bill of Rights; and his wife, Dolley, America's first "First Lady." The historic home and grounds are open to visitors and student groups throughout the year. Mansion tours are complemented by galleries, the Museum Shop, an archaeology lab and active archaeological dig sites, gardens, 6+ miles of forest trails, and award winning BBQ at the David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center's Exchange Cafe. Located 25 miles north of Charlottesville and 4 miles south of historic Orange on Route 20, Constitution Highway. Montpelier is administered by The Montpelier Foundation, wich seeks to inspire continuing public engagement with American constitutional self-government by bringing to life the home and contributions of James and Dolley Madison. Montpelier is a National Trust Historic Site.

I'm a big James Madison fanboy, so this review may be a bit biased, but I thoroughly enjoyed Montpelier. The guides did a pretty good job. We opted for the Madison and the Constitution tour--if you don't know a lot about the founding timeframe and Madison's role in creating the Republic, then you MUST do this tour. If, however, you're... More

I attended the Log Cabin Building Expediton that is part of their LEARN programs. We built a 12' x 14' log cabin that will be put out in a location to represent the cabins lived in by the Montpelier slaves. Our instructors were the great folks from Salvagewrights. We learn about choosing the logs, prepping them, hewing, notching, putting the... More

The National Trust restored the home to the exact configuration of the time of James Madison's public career. Likewise the furnishings are of the same period, although some are reproductions. The library where he prepared a draft of the US Constitution even has the same editions of books he owned, although his original books were sold by his stepson. The... More

For traveler's interested in U.S. history, very interesting comparison/contrast with Thomas Jefferson's Monticello (both buildings and personalities). Highlight is the last stop inside the home, where Madison's research let to his extensive contribution to the U.S. Constitution. February not the best month to visit, though.

Needing to escape the inauguration of the orange man in Washington DC, we felt it appropriate to visit the house of a real president, especially the author of the Bill of Rights and co-author of the Constitution, since those documents will become increasingly important as we enter these dark days. Learning more about James Madison and his incredible influence in... More

We very much enjoyed the tour of the residence of one of the most important U.S. Presidents (and First Lady). The tour of the Madisons' residence is augmented by the history of the DuPont's ownership and subsequent renovation(s). A great tour with knowledgeable guides which provided us with a greater appreciation of this President and First Lady.

We just toured James and Dolley Madison's Montpelier and it capped off our visits to four of the Founding Fathers' estate visits over the last few months. It's an easy drive from the greater DC area (about 2 hours). Back in the day, it took 3-4 days to reach Alexandria! The home was built not far from Madison's birthplace, Mount... More

It is a pleasant winding drive to reach the Visitor's Center of James and Dolly Madison's home where you can purchase your tickets when you first arrive. There are discounts for National Trust members, military and seniors. The day we visited, children were admitted free as part of a holiday promotion. There is a nice gift shop with a variety... Just south of Orange and about 45 minutes north of Charlottesville, Montpelier is a significant site for understanding the early days of the American Republic. In the home of James and Dolley Madison, the visitor guide promises an introduction to the "Father of the Constitution, "Architect of the Bill of Rights" and "America's First Lady" in one visit. The house... More

Last year I had the opportunity to visit the home and grave of the Father of the Constitution, one of the half dozen greatest of our Founding Fathers. This is at least an all day event which requires a lot of walking if you do it thoroughly. If you are in good health you should be able to cover everything... More
