Belle Grove is located in the northern Shenandoah Valley near Middletown, Virginia. It is an authentic 1797 Manor House, was built by Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly Madison Hite, sister of President James Madison. Major Hite, grandson of Shenandoah Valley Pioneer Jost Hite, expanded his original 483 acres to a prosperous 7500 acre plantation, growing wheat, raising cattle and Merino sheep, and operating a large distillery and several mills.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but this was a great stop. Even better when your map takes you on the backroads. Enjoyed the gardens and the home.

This is nice tour but the furnishings are not original to property. Interesting that President Madison and his wife honeymooned here. His signature is shown in photo. Less then expected having seen other plantations in other southern states.

Belle Grove Plantation is unique in that it is one of the best preserved early American period houses retaining many of its original furnishings. I highly recommend taking a guided tour with a docent. The plantation/farm house has too many "neat' things to mention. The...More

In the day I decided to visit Belle Grove, they were having a Master Garden Event on the lawn in front of the Manor House. This also led the tours to be $5 instead of $12 and self guided. There were about five docents in...More

This is really a beautiful historic house. The view is breathtaking and the amount of history that surrounds this place is amazing. It's pretty incredible that this house survived considering how old it is but it is well maintained and the tour guide was very...More
