For three centuries, our family has made our way of life in the rolling landscapes of Fauquier County, Virginia. We have proudly served as stewards of the Virginia Piedmont, a unique and special place enriched with cultural significance of sweeping historical importance. We invite you and your families to share these pastoral meadows, primordial forests, and gentle slopes lined with lush vineyards that we have called home for generations. Virginians have long identified themselves with the vine, have recognized its importance, and have consistently promoted a viable wine industry. As Virginians, grape and wine production is part of our collective cultural identity and heritage dating back as early as 1619 with the adoption of the Twelfth Act of the Original Acts of the Virginia General Assembly that required every landowner to plant and maintain ten vines. Today, what was once a dream of a few Founding Fathers has now become a reality for all to share and enjoy. Wine in moderation is an integral part of our family's heritage. At Philip Carter, our history is wine, and our future is to promote the gracious way of life through wine, art and culture. Philip Carter Winery offers the absolute perfect way for each and every person to enjoy the unique terroir and breathtaking beauty of Fauquier County. From a romantic walk through the Philip Carter vineyards to an elegant winemaker's dinner in our grand Cleve Hall or the perfect personalized, private group tasting in our King Carter suite overlooking the vineyards, our incredible family winery is sure to satisfy!

This was a preplanned stop while traveling through Virginia. We purchased a voucher from Travelzoo for tasting, tour and picnic. We were the only couple there on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. Dominic was knowledgeable and friendly and made the experience worthwhile. The wines were average, the picnic basket could be better and tours are only Thursday-Sunday. We made the best... More

My friend and I had a groupon or living social deal (can't remember which) that allowed us a winery tour, wine tasting in their upstairs room, and then a picnic basket of goodies and blanket to enjoy a bottle of wine on the grounds. We had a great time and both have been back multiple times since then!

Stumbled upon Philip Carter Winery while heading back from Front Royal. We noticed several wineries signs on Rt. 66, so we decided to explore what Virginia Wine country had to offer. When we came upon the winery, we noticed all these people having picnic’s and enjoying live music, so immediately thought it was a private party. However, a staff member... More

Coworker gave me a gift of a tour, tasting, and picnic lunch. Started with brief history and tour outside on a warm February day. Then the tasting. My favorite was the portlike wine but you can't buy a bottle unless you are a club member. Other wines were good but average. They are only 9 years under this owner, so... More

Whether you visit as guest or club member you will get a warm welcome and a breadth of tastings that pretty much guarantee you'll find something you like. We first discovered PC winery through a groupon tour and have enjoyed exploring their wines and surrounding area since. The Inn at Vineyards Crossing owned by the same family is a great... More

I headed to Philip Carter as my second winery of the day and had a delightful time. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and Alex, my server, was very knowledgeable. They had three whites, four reds and two dessert wines to try. I really liked all the whites, buying a bottle of their unique Chardonnay as a gift. The reds... More

We visited this winery last month and were pleasantly surprised. They have a nice selection of wines in every category. All were very good and smooth, without any after burn or bite. Each wine had a distinctive taste all its own and they were all delightful from the first bouquet to the afterglow. Our guide was very knowledgeable and patient,... More

There is plenty of space if you want to sit inside, but there is also quite a bit of outdoor seating too. This is one of the few wineries where you can get right up close to the grapes and see their vineyards. The tasting is very good, and the woman who did ours was very friendly and knowledgeable. This... More
