This is my favorite cavern that I have visited so far. Daniel our tour guide was the best!! Very informative. Answered our many questions. Lots of stories. You can see civil war signatures on a wall. It was a mile and a half to the...More

Grand Caverns is beautiful! We had a wonderful tour with Ashley. This was less commercial and less crowded, and less expensive, than Luray (we did visit on a weekday in August, so maybe it was just a slow day!). Thoroughly enjoyed the cavern and would...More

We went with our 2 older teenagers. We all enjoyed it very much. Jeffrey, our guide, was great! There's plenty of light and open spaces. This is a huge cavern, if someone is claustrophobic, you should be fine. The ceilings are all very tall with...More

We were entertaining out of town guests and thought this would work. There is a paved/gravely, steep, hill up to the cave entrance. Difficult if you aren't fairly fit. Although listed as a great family venue, I would say nix to any under 10 unless...More

We had a very informative and enjoyable Saturday morning tour with Jeffrey. He deftly weaved history and science into our 70 minute walk into and back out of the caverns. If we were younger, we'd sign up for the spelunking. Note that the hike up...More

Grand Caverns is listed as the oldest show cave in the United States. The park itself encompasses many activities for your family. There is a swimming pool, a miniature golf course, and tennis courts. There is a trail around the perimeter of the park that...More

Grand Caverns is a refreshing change from Luray given it's not overly commercialized. The grounds and gift shop are like a flashback to the 1980s, but that is a good thing. Low tech but informative, interesting displays occupy visitors while they await their tour time....More

Located 15 minutes north of Staunton, VA. A little expensive ($20, with various discounts); however, it truly is a great cave. Has a large variety of formations, including a big concentration of shield formations. Also has several very large chambers; more than a lot of...More

Took my kids, 10 and 12 through the cavern. They loved it. Our guide, Jeff, was very knowledge and very patient with all of their questions. Would recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in caverns, natural history and human history.

There is no age limit for cave tours and we have many children come through our cave every day. Grand Caverns is not stroller/wheelchair accessible, however.

I don't recall any particular smells. It is damp in the caves and where there is dampness there is bound to be mold, but as much of the interior is quite large, I imagine the mold is dispersed.
