Built in 1936, The State Theatre operated as a popular movie until the late 1980's. The first film shown was Thanks A Million starring Dick Powell and on November 27, 1988 the State closed its doors after a final showing of Die Hard starring Bruce Willis. The first theatre on the East Coast to be centrally air-conditioned, the State was the flagship of the family-owned Neighborhood Theatres chain which also operated, among others, the Glebe (now a Duron paint store), the Buckingham (now a Post Office) and the Jefferson (now a Chile's restaurant). A multi-million dollar restoration in the late 1990's turned it into the Washington Metro area's favorite new venue for live music and private events. The full theatrical stage is original, as are the 200 balcony seats and both lobbies. The theatre seats on the main floor were removed to allow for the re-design of the auditorium which now accommodates full service dining, standing and dancing areas and two full service bars. The restoration also added a full service restaurant for dining and catering private events.

The State Theatre really needs to work on its food service. We had reservations, arrived at 7:10 and were ready to order before 7:30. Brian did not come to take our order until 20 minutes later, 10 minutes before the 8pm show. The show didn't...More

Generally good music from up and coming bands. Food "ok" but expensive as are beverages. Great location for locals.

Old movie houses make the best concert venues. Not quite quaint but intimate enough for a good time. Last nights show by The Neal Morse Band heralded my first visit to The State. It's a uniquely decent arrangement with a SRO area by the stage,...More

We love going to the State Theatre. A great venue to see a concert. The food is OK; the service Ok; but the beer is better. I wish they did pitchers. A couple of tips: reserve a table in advance; reservations cost $10 for a...More

I love seeing music acts here. This old movie theater has been lovingly restored to its former glory and hosts many national musical acts.. Every spot in the theater has a good stage view. Drinks are good and reasonable in price as are ticket prices....More
