I recently played at Penderbrook again, on a Sunday morning. The tee times are always, always, always stacked up at Penderbrook. The reason is that it usually a decent price, if you use an email special, or are in the military. $35 for military personnel on a Sunday morning? Includes cart, for 18 holes in Northern Virginia? Yep.
The condition of the course has ranged from horrendous to good. It is currently (Aug 14) in good shape. The greens were in excellent shape, although why people do not repair their ball marks from hitting the green kills me. Take the minute to repair the mark so it doesn't ruin the surface for the rest of us!
The place is ALWAYS slow. People tee off one after another and the course is narrow, so it often backs up while someone is looking for their lost ball in the trees, near the stream, etc. There is a stretch of 3 consecutive holes that go over water, which is hard for some players... so it can back up. Plan on a 4:45-5 hour round. Seriously, I have never played a round in under 4:30. This is the only reason it doesn't rate a 4... because the course is fun and challenging, fairly narrow. Inexpensive with special though!
OOOOH, and I forgot.... NO DRIVING RANGE!!! ARGH!!! I still go though :)

If you played here more than two years ago you may be hesitant to return. It's under new management (Traditions, like Stonewall) They are making improvements and throwing money at it without raising green fees. I joined the $40 Commonwealth Club as a Senior and get $25 rounds with cart Mon-Thu and every 10th round free. There are a couple amusement park quality holes, 8,9,11 and 17, but for the price in Fairfax County I play here every week. Gimmick holes included.. .

I love this course never get tired of playing it, and they have a membership program that offers free beverages when you arrive. Prices are decent for the area.

Played this course a year ago and boy has it improved . Really nice. Less trees, better fairways, still challenging with water and traps and woods. Great condition now . Even though clubhouse and restaurant was closed to protect the staff , very smooth way to get a reservation on line and starting . Will play again and again.

We traveled from Delaware to try a new course.
Pro shop was helpful at our check in. It had a great layout and was very clean.
We were earlier enough to grab a quick bit to eat. All food is made to order. Nothing is sitting waiting to be served even the hotdog! And lots of drinks to choose from. Our server was very friendly she filled our cooler we had with ice.
The tee boxes and greens on the entire course were in excellent condition as for the fairway! When we previewed the course through the website it showed many houses close by. This particularly made me nervous but after playing the course they were not nearly as close as we originally thought.
Quite a few holes have water which made it challenging but still a lot of fun to play.
There is an outside bar at the turn this is only open on the weekend. But we did see the drink cart very often throughout our play. There is also many bathrooms throughout the course. I have only seen one bathroom on the corse at one other club. As a woman is was great to see!!!

I believe they are under new mangement because they have made a lot of improvements. Course conditions are great right now! Greens are rolling perfect! The clubhouse is improved with a great new bar! The staff was great and friendly!

New management!! Welcome change. It's beautiful inside and out. Great food reasonably priced customer service is over the top.

Had 4 hrs and 45 min to play a round, assumed that would be plenty of time. NO! We got stuck behind the SLOWEST group who was so clueless to the fact that they had created a 2 group backup behind them with the next group a full hole ahead. We waited a minimum of 10 minutes on every tee box, occasionally with another group behind us. We stayed right on their back in hopes they'd get the message, and they got angry and wanted us to "lay back."
After 16 holes the rest of our group quit in frustration. On 17, having expected to have finished 30 minutes before and running out of time, we waited in the fairway in view of the group in front of us for 10 minutes for them to take their time getting off the green After that they actually hit one of our drives back to us on 18 and one of them confronted us for real as we approached the green. As we finished the dreadful round they complained to the management, still ignorant of the fact that they had held up every group behind them, and accused us of intentionally hitting on top of them. We explained our frustration to the management, and to our disbelief they told us they didn't care if we never came back.
No one on the course speeding up play.
Mediocre conditions.
Slow carts.
No concern for the satisfaction of paying customers.
Clueless and mean players.
This place does not deserve your business, period. It's unbelievable that 4:45 wasn't enough time for one round, and on top of that we were treated like trash by both other players and the course management.

Had a non-expiring two for one. They said it was with the old management company. So what...give me some type of break or deal. No not with them. I was also 5 minutes from twilight. Nope...no twilight rate. The guy in the shop had a bad attitude especially when I asked twice if they would do something for us. I will never return to Penderbrook. Oh and on golf now they have available tee times all day on a Saturday...what does that tell you? Bad business.

I played here recently for their NFL Kickoff scramble with a buddy of mine. Not a stranger to these best ball scrambles, I found Penderbrook to be very disorganized. No signs on the carts until a few minutes before we teed off, the food in the clubhouse was sub-par (not to mention) they ran out of bbq pork half way through the buffet lunch, decor was tired looking, the whole clubhouse was kinda small, etc. But the course itself was in rough shape, fairways were pretty haggard, mushrooms growing in the middle of the fariways, greens beat to hell, you couldn't tell where the fringe/rough/fairway started or ended, etc. Would I come back to play this course, probably not. Much better courses throughout VA & MD to play.
