Overview
More
Located just south of Charlottesville, Virginia, Michael Shaps Wineworks is Virginia's first and largest custom contract winemaking operation. Known for his innovation in the industry, Michael Shaps introduced the "bag in a box" to Virginia wine consumers and most recently introduced a refillable wine growler. Michael is the winner of more Gold medals in the 2015 Virginia Governor's Cup wine competition than any other Virginia winery, and has been featured in numerous national publications. In addition to the Virginia winery, Michael owns a winery in Burgundy, France and imports these wines to the United States. Guests are welcome to taste the Virginia wines or the Burgundy wines.

I'll say it up front - we did not enjoy this tasting. Though it is a working vineyard, the tasting room was rather unwelcoming. It felt like an impersonal afterthought and the man handling our tasting was pretty impersonal uppity too. Perhaps the attitude works...More

Michael Shaps 2014 was the Virginia white wine we served at our wedding in 2015. Loved this tasting because the staff was very knowledgeable and personable. We were able to taste wines from Michael Shaps French vineyards. The only French wines we tasted on our...More

We stopped at Michael Shaps WineWorks (extended on Avon Street) on 5/28. There are two locations. The one on Harris Creek Road and the "new" one on Avon Street. We really enjoy their unique and different wines. Tasting room is small, but well done with...More

We were doing an afternoon winery tour after spending the day at Monticello. Prior to Michael Shaps we had visited Trump and First Colony, and had enjoyed both stops. Michael Shaps did not disappoint. Tasting room - The tasting room is very basic, and I...More

I like VA wine, I really do, but I think a $50+ bottle of wine should be exceptional, not just good but exceptional. These are good solid wines that will get better with age and, yes the experience is worth something, but I am seriously...More

Stopped at Michael Shaps in July 2016. The tasting room is not elaborate, but has a great history (old signs, metal siding from local historic buildings). Cassandra told us all about the construction. We liked the "homey" feel and felt very welcome. Cassandra, the manager,...More

Others are correct that the tasting room is small and unimpressive. Also, the elderly gentleman employee who was pouring was a real talker. In fact, he talked so much that my husband had to make a quick exit. The white blend called "Odette" was delicious!...More

This winery has been suggested to us by someone pouring at another winery. He said that the winery had been receiving awards for their wines. The site was modest, to say the least. It is definitely make for production. The tasting included either the wines...More

All the wines here are great and the hosts are friendly. Kind of nostalgic for their old bare bones tastings held in the barrel room with the wooded plank table (with lower tasting fees and deals if you bought bottles!) but i cant knock them...More

One of the best wineries. I used to live in Virginia but live in Kentucky now. I go to Virginia yearly to get wine and always stop here as Michael Shape makes excellent wine. They have a new tasting room and the people who do...More
