Overview
More
The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is the largest collection of Indigenous Australian art outside Australia, and comprises over 1800 objects and paintings created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from different regions of Australia. Visiting the Kluge-Ruhe is a terrific opportunity to learn about a different culture, view a film of artists creating and discussing their art, and see the gorgeous views of Charlottesville from this museum on a hill. An exhibition of works from the permanent collection is changed annually, while special exhibitions in the rotating gallery change every four months. Special events include lectures and performances by visiting artists, scholars, and musicians, film screenings, and educational programs for all ages. A free guided tour of the current exhibitions is offered each Saturday at 10:30 am.

How much do you know about Aboriginal people? Well after a tour of Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, you will want to know more. Each artist rendering tells a story to the history and traditions of Aboriginal life. The grounds are lovely. Pack a lunch, bring...More

The museum was built from private collections, and has some good items, though it is quite small; but a pleasure all the same.

This is the nation's largest / only (?) exhibit of Australian Aboriginal art. It's a wonderful free option while visiting Charlottesville and walkable if you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. I have been to Australia and spent time there enjoying Aboriginal art as...More

The building was owned by Thomas Jefferson's father, and the setting is beautiful. The permanent collection, and the exhibition on Australian aboriginal art that we saw in September, were world-class

Wonderful collection of Aboriginal Art. I learned a lot about how the art was/is produced. It will make you want to go down under to see this art produced for yourself.

I don't particularly care about aboriginal art but I am glad I visited this museum. First of all, it is in a lush park-like setting at the top of a hill. Second, the building was designed by Thomas Jefferson. Though he never lived there, it...More

This is a very small museum and won't take long to visit. We stopped in on our way back from doing something else. It you find other cultures interesting it is certainly worth a visit. There was good signage to explain what you are seeing.

We visited the museum with my daughter and grand daughter. Much of the art consisted of dot paintings, each one telling a different story. The explanations were excellent, as was a may showing the locations of each family grouping. There was also a special photographic...More

The Kluge-Ruhe is a rare gem in the United States: a true window into the little understood realm of aboriginal art. The art on display is modern, not ancient, but having been to Australia recently, we instantly saw that artistic themes and techniques have been...More

The exhibit space (aside from temporary exhibits) is only 4 rooms, but it has excellent contemporary aboriginal art. It's worth a trip if you like aboriginal art or if you've never seen any - and the price is right (free.)
