- CLTDUOCharlotte, North Carolina93 contributionsYour choice of tasting experienceDiscovered this winery and love that you have tasting choices. We opted for the tasting card where you purchase a card and choose 6 wines that are dispensed in a self serve fashion. There is a more formal tasting room option but we loved the opportunity to sit by the fireplace and savor each wine. We found the staff engaging. The beauty of the experience is if you have 30 minutes or several hours to spend, you control the tasting experience. There are several wines that aren’t available in self serve format but can be purchased. Suggest trying Octagon as it is magnificent but all of the wines were memorable. May have a hard time deciding which one to purchase so be prepared to buy multiples. If you want the full tasting experience, there is a restaurant also.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- Barb GMaryville, Tennessee145 contributionsWould return. We had a lovely visit at Barboursville Vineyards. We not only enjoyed our wine tasting, but we loved seeing the ruins. Barboursville was a busier vineyard than some others, but the staff was very nice, friendly and accommodating, even though busy. We would return.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 June 2024
- A M34 contributionsDelicious wines, wonderful experienceMy husband and I were on a multi-city vacation to celebrate our 45th, and started at Barboursville Winery. We had visited this special place many times years ago while travelling to Charlottesville, and were back to re-live memories and enjoy what the Vineyards has to offer. We started in the Discovery Room for our first tasting. It was great to see that the room is open for personal tastings again (as it was the last times we were there) and it has to be such a good feel for Luca and the staff members who successfully managed the COVID struggles with other wine tasting alternatives. There are multiple stations where 12 wines are offered, in 1/2 oz. pours. We then went next door to Library 1821 for our 3:30 tasting. It was very special. Our server started with a celebratory glass of Blanc de Noir as we sat at the settee/couch, with views outside of the beautiful landscaping. She helped us make our selections for the Classic 6 flight, which was easier since we had just enjoyed the other tasting and knew which ones we preferred. The service was excellent. We were there at a time when there was no crowd, we had reservations, and we left feeling that we had a wonderful experience. As well as a bottle of Merlot and Nebbiolo to go. So many delicious wines to taste, including their signature Octagon. We spent the night at one of the 1804 Inn cottages, which I'm discussing on a separate review.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2024

My friends and I spent this past weekend in Charlottesville for my bday. Barboursville was on my list of visits. We arrived not long after they opened on Sunday and went in for a tasting. $15 for six 1 ounce pours, not bad. We purchased an additional glass of the octagon and it was delicious. My girlfriend actually purchased 5 bottles of wine after the tasting.. We then wanted to grab a light bite to eat and went to the library for a cheese and charcuterie board. The hostess who greeted us was extremely rude and treated us like weren't going to spend money , at this point we already spent well over $250 on the tasting and bottles. We were told seating was limited, we understood, and then were questioned if we were purchasing wine and food. We told her we were definitely purchasing food and before we could get another word out she said "and more wine?" Our server didn't seem too thrilled to be waiting on us either. Rushed us to order, didn't offer suggestions, and was bothered because I wasn't sure which wine I wanted to try outside of what I already had(hello! chance to interact and upsell) At one point while the server was bringing out plates we heard her say very loudly "Jesus Christ" like she was bothered with having to work. Or maybe because she was too old? Not sure. After spending another $80 she rushed to close out our tab so we could leave. After my experience I was just ready to leave and didn't even bother wasting another $ there. The only reason I'm giving a 3 is because of the gentleman who greeted us by the tasting room. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and the wine was good. Im glad we could drop over $300 in less than 2 hours to be treated like we didn't belong. Maybe remind your staff that treating people good could lead you to more sales and not run off your customers

Very impressed with the Barboursville winery experience. The tasting room is separated into stations with four wines tasted at each. The staff were very knowledgeable and took us through the grapes and vintages.
There are several gift items and of course bottles to purchase. We had lunch in the 'Library' of Virginian cheeses and prosciutto, salami with dips and chutney.
Highly recommend a visit

I've been to Charlottesville several times and never really considered this winery until our most recent trip. It was fantastic in every way and definitely exceeded my expectations, especially during Covid. Beautiful entrance and rooms, great Covid protocols, loved that we were able to pick our flights by single wines and that they were served in crystal glasses. The charcuterie tray was amazing in the Library! We sat where we could overlook the ruins, then we walked over to see them up close. We definitely will be returning and making this a regular stop!

A different type of tasting for sure. Staff was friendly and helpful. After you secure a card, the wine is dispensed by a machine for a perfect 1 oz. pour. Staff are available to tell you about the wines and recommend based upon your likes. I found several that I enjoyed. I am fond of Moscato wines and theirs was so smooth and flavorful. Yes, I bought a bottle.
The ruins were interesting.

Some people really know their stuff. Some people have great social skills. But few people can proudly claim both. Cathy can. She made our visit a memorable pleasure, building on the other great assets of this venue: an impressive variety of carefully crafted wines, matching cuisine, attractive facilities, and a wonderful location among verdant hills.
We live two hours drive from Barboursville Vineyards, but we will not hesitate to make the trip again.

Driving up to the grounds was impressive. The vineyards, building, and view were just as pretty in person as the website. Unfortunately, the overall experience wasn't as stunning. The staff was not attentive or welcoming, and there was no personal service. Wine tasting was self serve and didn't really allow for experiencing the views while tasting wines. The indoor acoustics were very loud and not conducive to private conversations. Overall, the whole visit was very commercialized and not intimate.

This by far one of our favorite vineyards, but on our visit yesterday we were "very disappointed" in the way they are handling seating in the Library and outdoor area. We arrive and find that there are not seats available, which is totally understandable. We were told to come back in 15 minutes and see if anything has opened up. We asked if we can put our name in and were told no, you just have to check back later. The issue is people continue to walk up to the check-in, so you are in a position where people that come in 10 minutes or so after you then get a seat while you were their 1st waiting. You are not allowed to wait near the check-in which again is understandable, but you should take names of people in the order they have arrived to be seated. Tables are also limited because the wine tours get first seating, but it is really poor customer service to tell people to come back in 15 minutes only to find new people, which are not part of the wine tours, at tables that got a table 5 minutes after you attempted to get one and were turned away and told to come back.

Of the many wineries my wife and I visited during our drive through Charlottesville Wine Country, the tasting experience at Barboursville Vineyards was the best. Guests were able to select the wines they wanted to sample and didn’t have a pre-determined flight. This was very important (to us) to be able to select what we would like to taste given most tastings are are $12-$18. Kudos to Barboursville for letting the customer choose! The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. They have several options on how you would like to experience your tasting. I highly recommend a stop. Put Barboursville at the top of your list.

You have a choice of two tasting: we chose a seated wine tasting in the Library room (reservations needed for groups). Our waitress Amanda was the best! She was friendly, personable, and enthusiastic! She gave us a few extra pours and accommodated our request of a blind tasting. We were even able to order some of the cauliflower soup that we loved from the night before! And the charcuterie boards looked awesome! We will definitely be back and will probably bring our children! Can’t wait to come back!!!

Beautiful grounds complete with an area they are restoring to native flora.
Walking around the historic ruins of the property, a home designed by Jefferson himself, is most interesting. A nice tasting room, an outside deck to enjoy the grounds and a wonderful restaurant all make this a special winery to visit. Would highly recommend the tasting at the 1821 Library. You benefit from the food prepared in the restaurant and weather permitting sitting outside while enjoying all this estate has to offer It is a real treat.
Look for Carol in the tasting room. She graciously shared so much of the history of this interesting winery with us. She is a real asset and champion of Barboursville.

They do have a restaurant and fare to accompany their wines, so I don't know how they feel about picnics. I suggest emailing them and asking . . . they responded in a timely manner when I emailed them. Have a great trip!

We were there on a weekday in the off season and there were children there with parents. During their season, there is a restaurant, so I would say that children are welcome.
