The paintings and artefacts were not particularly different from those in any small provincial museum. But the special section on covered bridges was totally fascinating, and kept us there for far longer than we intended.

I was very surprised at the size and wealth of art at the Bennington Center for the Arts. It's a lovely museum with a variety of different exhibits. There was a great exhibit on up and coming young artists from around the country. And the covered bridge exhibit was a wealth of information. Kids would love this one! Don't miss the video!

This Center contains an art museum, a stage used by an Actor's Equity Theater Company and a Covered Bridge Museum. Because of time constraints we only visited a fraction of the art museum area, the part with extremely impressive woodcarvings of birds. We spent a great deal of time in the Covered Bridge Museum wing. There is an informative video you can watch (and we did watch and recommend). There are also models and displays of covered bridges, examples of the hand tools used to build the bridges, artistic images of the bridges. There is also a video game you can play to try your hand at designing one, though I did not find it intuitive and so didn't play with it too long. After you visit you will have a much better idea of why people built covered bridges, what the engineering design elements of bridges are and what hazards have destroyed so many of the covered bridges.

In an area with so many other art resources, paying $9 admission for this gallery makes no sense. Go to the Clark, MassMoCA, or the Williams College Art Museum instead.

This person obviously never went in the art center, other than to find the admission fee to complain about.
They weren't interested in the 7 galleries containing over 1000 artworks, mostly by or of native Americans and the largest collection of master champion bird carvings by Floyd Scholz, let alone the only Museum o the Covered Bridge in the world.
I'm sure they didn't pay $10 to tour the Bennington Museum or the $20 for the Clark, but probably got into Williams College which is free.

When we planned on visiting The Covered Bridge Museum and Bennington Center for the Arts, in Bennington, VT, our aim was really just to see the Covered Bridge portion. However, the side of the museum that was an art gallery was the highlight. There were numerous paintings done by local artists in many different styles. When going in, you're given a piece of paper to choose your favorite for a contest they are holding. This made it a much more enjoyable experience as you got to almost act as a judge in an art contest.
The 2nd half of the museum walks you through the history of Covered Bridges in Vermont and the rest of the country. There are numerous photographs from all over that show you how they vary. If you're a fan of covered bridges, this is definitely a good place to visit. However, any non-aficionados may opt to pass.
One really nice portion of this was also a "library" of books that show all the covered bridges in different states, broken down by counties. This lets you determine where covered bridges are near your own home, to give you a fun little side trip to do at home.

We went for the Covered Bridge Exhibit (which we really enjoyed) but were surprised by all the other exhibits - the rooms just went on & on and contained quite a variety of art and objects. We learned a lot and had a good time. It wasn't the quick stop we thought it'd be and are glad it wasn't! One tip - there are some neat gifts in the small gift shop - variety at very reasonable prices.

We went there just to check it out and see the covered bridge museum, but it was much more. A very nice series of artists, focusing on nature and local art. Some very nice works. The covered bridge area was actually less interesting that the discovery of the art (it helped that they were having an opening that day).

I have been to the Bennington Art Center as a guest, as an instructor and as an artist. I have been to the center theater and sat in the audience as the audience roared with laughter. I have enjoyed the Covered Bridge museum and especially the Fine Art Collection. This Center should be on everyones stop if in Vermont for any reason. It is wonderfully maintained and very informing.

Hi: Are there artist workshops offered through this center?

I think this reviewer has another organization in mind. This is a museum of paintings, sculpture and other fine works of art. And it's a great museum! To the best of my knowledge, there are no performances in this building.
