We left just before sunset. The monuments emerged against the backdrop of the wide open space. It was beyond peaceful. The sun created beautiful colors as the rays bounced off the rock. One of my most memorable times of our 10 day Northern Arizona trip!’

The scenery is truly stunning, the Wildcat Trail is a 3.2 mile hiking trail located within Monument Valley National Park. It is one of the most popular trails in the park, and offers breathtaking views of the rock formations of Monument Valley.
The trail begins at The View Hotel and winds through a desert landscape, skirting canyons and rocky pinnacles. The trail is relatively easy, with an elevation gain of about 600 feet. It is advisable to organize yourself beforehand with suitable equipment for the desert and water in tow, better if you follow the advice and company of a local native guide.

make new, or a road. Thank God we had a Jeep rental. Compared to a national park like Yellowstone, it is a shame such a short trail, image of the Navajo People in the reservation is in such a deplorable condition and presentation.

The 3.8-mile Wildcat Trail starts near the driver's entrance of the 17-mile loop of the park. The tribe asks that you sign in and out at the trailhead. As I recall, the hike took my family 2-3 hours. The hike is easy/moderate until the last maybe 0.5 mile where you climb back out of the valley through soft sand. It takes you around the West Mitten Butte with great views of multiple monuments. Great hike!

Absolutely stunning ! Ideal temperature at the end of the morning in early May. Breathtaking views, the impression of being immersed in this exceptional site. The trail is around 7km, the end is a little difficult but frankly it is accessible. To choose between this trail or the valley by car, choose the trail!

Very easy loop trail. 6.1 Km loop in Monument Valley. Starting from the beginning or car tour, it's a loop trail that will bring down to one of the three major rocks in the park. Closed from 12.00 to 03.00 pm due to sun, the trail is completely under the sun. The first 3 km are stunning. The second part is not so beautiful but the whole trail grants an immersive experience.

This is one of the only trails open available for the public to hike. After we did the morning backcountry tour, we went back in the afternoon and did this 4- mile hike. It was an easy hike, pretty flat, and took us through some incredibly beautiful scenery.

Was here in late September this year. We arrived around 5PM so the car tour was out of the equation, and we decided to take the Wildcat Trail.
It was magnicifent, trail leads between 3 main buttes and you can see them in close - breathtaking.
It takes around 2 hours. It's rather easy and can be completed by everyone.

Hi, I'm hoping to hike Wildcat Trail on March 14th. The Monument Valley website says the park is closed from Oct-March 30th, but is that the trail as well or can I park and enter? Thank you!

We are very interested in the wildcat trail hike. My wife and I are average+ hikers but the one thing that will deter her from going is the possibility of “venomous reptiles”. Has anyone seen any snakes along the hike?
Written 15 January 2019
Ha ha ha... when researching prior to our trip, I cringed when I read about this. I am not fond of reptiles, especially snakes. But we did the trail December 23 and did not encounter any. Not sure in the heat of the summer though, so I guess maybe it depends on when you are planning to go. I would not let that stop me from going on this hike, though. I would take my hiking stick and be very aware of my surroundings, but I don't think it's an issue an all.

Are you allowed to take the leash off your dog and release your dog into places where there are stray dogs living in Monument Valley between Arizona & Utah USA?
Written 12 December 2018
No. This is a site that is sacred to the Navajo and under their jurisdiction.

Will wild horses follow your horses when riding horses on Wildcat Trail at

Why are wild horses too dangerous for you to get close and pet them in Wildcat trail of Monument Valley USA?
Written 17 July 2018
First off, mustangs need to remain wild, so trying to pet them is a bad idea. If they lose their fear of people, they will begin to associate all people with food, & just like bears & other wild creatures, this habit always leads to the death of the animals involved, every time. Secondly, a wild horse can literally bite, kick, & accidentally kill you. If a mustang rears up on its hind legs & strikes your head with its front hooves, it’s sending you a strong message—perhaps the last you’ll ever receive. In fact, if you see any horse with its ears flat against its head, pay attention: That horse is not feeling friendly!

You should always respect a wild horse’s space. Don’t approach them or try to pet them. Dangerous for you terrifying for them.

Have anyone seen bears and cougars living there?
Written 10 June 2018
Not when we were there however we did see wild horses.

My wife and I are heading to MV in late September. We'll probably only have time to either do the Wild Cat trail or the 17-mile scenic drive through MV. Any suggestions on which would be best? We're both fit, but we'll be doing quite a few other hikes on our trip, but also quite a lot of driving!
Written 15 May 2018
You will not see as much doing the hike as you will with the guided tour. While the hike is good, I strongly recommend doing the tour instead. Especially, if you are an avid hiker and have other great hiking opportunities available to you. Do not do the drive on your own...there are areas that you will not be able to access without a guide.

It looks like the park closes at 4:30 in October, is this the last entrance time, or do we need to be out by then? Planning our first trip thanks!
