We drove out to Hole in the Rock in a razor. We saw other vehicles, mostly trucks making the same trek, but wouldn't recommend driving it unless you had a vehicle with high clearance. The road is extremely rough in spots. We had a beautiful...More

We were driving a chevy malibu car - great gas mileage for a road trip but this washboard road was hard on the car. Can't have it both ways! It had rained just prior to our visit. We heard that the road is graded but...More

About 45 minutes on this nearly straight-and-level unpaved road leads you to Devils Garden, which has bizarre rock formations for you to wander around. Most visitors go only that far, then turn around back to Route 12 near Escalante UT. That portion of the road...More

What can I say - it's a well-scraped dirt road. Dusty with friendly cattle criss-crossing the road. it is a very wide dirt road and mildly scenic. But, it's worth any inconvenience to reach various canyons and other attractions.

This road is very bumpy. I drove down it slow and it still rattled the fillings out of my teeth! lol It is a long dirt road with many great unmarked hiking trails. I used Google maps to find the Zebra Slot Canyon Trail and...More

So we live in rural NH, on a dirt road. I thought it can't be THAT bad. It is worse than THAT bad. BUT.....it's worth it! So many amazing hikes leave from this road so it can't be missed. We were in a passenger car...More

Canyons of Escalante are almost all accessed via this road. It's completely washboarded, and not graded with any regularity (I think I read it gets graded twice a year?) But, if you plan accordingly, it's not a huge deal. Real by blogs at accidentaladventuress.com for...More

A great detour off this road for 8 miles will take you to almost to Harris Wash (in a 2wd) from where you can do a 2 mile hike to the start of Red Breaks Canyon. This is a slot canyon that runs for several...More

The Hole in the Rock Road (HITR) is a long, rough, dusty dirt road that is about 60 miles long. It starts off Hwy 12 east of Escalante, UT., and ends at an overlook of Lake Powell. There are numerous sites to see, exciting hikes...More
