Great hike up by the cliffs ($8) or you can see a lot of petrified trees/wood at the bottom (only $4/car). You can walk around much of the reservoir.

Each Utah state park is unique, some have just fishing, others have a museum but this one is the only one with petrified wood. A long felled tree is reconstructed on elevated bed allowing you to walk around and see the petrified pieces displayed with year rings visible in some of the sections. The nearby petrified garden contains some fine... More

Not really much there. Though we are not hikers, Not sure what the trail offers. There is a petrified tree to check out and some interesting displays in the visitor center.

This year we've decided to discover more state/national parks in Utah and this was our first stop. The hike is only ~3 miles total, but we also enjoyed walking around the reservoir. There were a lot of people fishing, but we didn't bring our gear. Paddle boarding was also a popular activity to do at the reservoir. The whole area... More

We drove the scenic byway from Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef and stopped here. It was $8 for the car load. We hiked a short, but very steep trail to the top of a butte or mesa. At the top, there were pieces of petrified wood scattered throughout and nice views of a lake or reservoir nearby. We hadn't taken... More

We stopped at the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park for a couple hours during our drive between Bryce Canyon and Capital Reef National Park and found this to be a nice detour on the Scenic Route 12. The state park entrance is ($8 per vehicle). There is a small visitor centre, an attractive small lake, campground and a good loop... More

This near Hwy 12 is simple to visit. Clear instructions at the gate and in the detailed brochure. Outdoor displays are well done with other path side foliage signage. A small inside display and gift shop is worth the stop.

Driving from Capitol Reef Park towards Bryce Canyon on beautiful Rt.12 we decided to stop at the Escalante Forest State Park. We payed the $8 entrance fee, were told it was a hilly trail, and received a glossy foldout brochure. We preceded to the not very well maintained trail and realized that there were numbered signs. We had picked up... More

Very well kept park near a small reservoir. Unlike most of s,outhern Utah thisi s an area of streams and lakes. Wonderful petrified wood with the best specimens on the more strenuous trail. Definitely need advance reservation for a campsite. Very, veryfriendly and helpful staff.
