My husband and I went here with my mom on a Friday afternoon. It is $2.00 per person and they do not take cards. They ask that high heels not be worn as those are hard on the wood floors. There is a nice 20 minute video and we are glad we watched it. The previous curator did an excellent job in the video and you learn so much that you wouldn't get just by walking through the house. After the video the very friendly gal at the front desk answered some questions and then you get to roam the first floor and second floor of the house. She even came upstairs to see how we were doing and to see if we had any additional questions. Such friendly folks in East Texas! We spent about an hour and a half there.
Mrs. Goodman-LeGrand bequeathed 9 acres, the house, and the entire contents of the house when she passed away in the late 30s. It was very interesting to see the contents of one family located all in one place.
Great destination for a morning or afternoon.

My wife and I have toured many old homes and estates. Some are furnished with replicas, others with period pieces, but very few of them have the actual furniture and belongings of the family that makes the house worth seeing. This 1859 mansion is a wonder--just as if the family had stepped away for a moment. The clothes are in the closet, the pots are by the beds, the table is set with their china, and the doctor's notes and books are open on his desk. The City of Tyler owns this house and is required to keep it well maintained, which it is. They have also produced a 20-minute video tour of this house, which I recommend before walking through. It is a little slow sometimes, but it will help you appreciate what you see as you walk through. Altogether, this is a wonderful stop if you like family history.

On a girls weekend of "lets see what we can see" to the Tyler Texas area, we stumbled upon the Goodman-LeGrand House. What a beautiful, well preserved home. The home was built in 1859 and there was much attention to detail. It was also the first home in Tyler to have electric lights, and also had indoor plumbing when it was not common.

What really impressed me what how the house was filled with personal items of the family that lived there. From the china, hand painted by on of the daughters, to the clothing and shoes of the daughters who grew up in the house. Usually a home of this type if filled with many items from all over the vicinity that fit in with the era. It really makes you feel like you know how the family was. They seemed like a very forward thinking, progressive family for their time. The gentleman who built the house was a surgeon in the Civil War.

The two women (volunteers I assume) were very knowledgable about items in the home and its history, and had many stories to share.

For just a $2 donation admission it was worth 10 times that. Tyler is not a big place, and this is a lovely piece of its history. Don't miss it.

The Goodman-Legrand House was time well spent and only cost two dollars per person as a donation. The house was beautiful and most of the furnishings were original family items. The curator/hostess was exceptional. She had a passion and knowledge of the house that was great. Ask her about the flooring in the house:) The twenty-five minute video is a must before you take the self-guided tour. Very well done and informative. Great piece of Texas history that has been saved for the masses.

I have always wanted to visit an American historical house and when I finally got my chance I was not disappointed. Sat in well maintained gardens this house is a well preserved jewel from the past. We were greeted by the curator who gave us an introduction and was happy to chat and answer any questions we had. The house has a lovely welcoming feel to it and a lovely smell of old wood, fragrant tobacco and resin, You would really imagine how it would have been there back in it's day. Well worth a visit.

Lovely, lovely home preserved from original family possessions. The 25 minute video is well worth your time before walking around. Every piece is priceless and has a story. I still find myself thinking of the Goodman and LeGrand families. Such a treasure!
Don’t forget to take the short walk around the back rose garden. It was beautiful in October.

I took my kids here and did we get lucky! The lady working for the afternoon gave us a guided tour which included all the gossip on the family that lived here and donated the house to the City. With her information and the clothing and artifacts, it was a wonderful experience. I'm not sure if all the volunteers are as knowledgable as she is or if we just got really lucky. Excellent visit. Wish it lasted longer!

My sister in law visited this home while my family and I were visiting her family in Tyler. Free entry, donations accepted. Beautiful home where you didn't feel like you were going to get a slap on the hand at any moment. The grounds are also beautiful. We visited in July of 2013 and the lady working there that day mentioned to us about their Christmas display and open house. I would love to go back and see it at Christmas. If I recall correctly, there are actors in period costume at that time.

My husband and I did a guided tour through the beautiful historic 1859 home on a Wednesday. Two guides were there on that day. The guides were staying busy doing most individual family/couple tours. The nice tour lasted almost 30 minutes. The home is located downtown (Tyler) on Boardwalk Ave. The home and lawn was very well maintained. The interior had mostly original antiques from the Goodman family. There is no fee but suggest a $2 donation per person. We donated more. The parking is small but can handle about 20 cars. RV would have a difficult time. Restrooms are in a separate building about 100 feet behind the home. This is a must see on Tyler.

My friend and I visited the Goodman-LeGrand House on a cold, rainy January morning. It was after the holidays, but the Christmas decor was still intact. Passing over the thresh hold was like stepping back in time. Before taking the tour of the home, we enjoyed a 20 minute video detailing the families who had inhabited it and the changes made to it over the years. We were then invited to stroll through the home at our own pace. What sets the Goodman-LeGrand House apart from other historical homes is that the contents were all original to the home, right down to the clothing in the closets. Especially noteworthy is the exquisite china service gracing the dining room table which was hand painted by a previous owner. All of these delights were set off by the twinkling Christmas lights, making our visit nearly perfect. My friend and I loved our visit and plan to return in the spring when the garden's azaleas are at their peak. This grand dame is worthy of a visit no matter the time of year you find yourself in Tyler.
