We stopped by Fort Concho in the late afternoon on a Friday, so we decided to do the self-guided tour. The staff was quite helpful in giving us general information about the fort and its history before we headed out on our own. The restorations have been very well done and we enjoyed moseying our way around the fort area.... More

You may expect to see John Wayne ride into the parade grounds of this historic fort. Beautifully restored and preserved, this site features stables, bunk houses, headquarters and a dining hall.

If you like history and the old west you need to visit Fort Concho. This was the best and most complete old frontier fort in the US. The City of San Angelo has done an excellent job. Kudos!

Multiple buildings are open for touring. The information is posted and explains the sites as you tour. Several exhibits describe life at the Fort, the men who inhabited the site and Day to day life. Very well maintained with events periodically throughout the year. Well worth a visit as it housed the Buffalo Soldiers and played a role in the... More

Adaptive reuse following the US Army's abandonment saved Fort Concho from the fate of most Texas Frontier Forts (most notably Robert E. Lee's old command Fort Mason) of being stripped to the foundations by local residents. Fort Concho stands pretty much intact, just steps away from downtown San Angelo.

We were traveling through West Texas & found ourselves in San Angelo. We love forts & anything that pertains to TX history. We happened on Fort Concho. It's interesting & well preserved. As we read the posters in the museum area we could imagine & feel what it might have been like to be a soldier there. There was a... More

We have visited several of the old Army forts that dot the Texas historical frontier. Fort Concho did not disappoint. There are many well preserved buildings that have been well restored and preserved for the viewing public. The old fort is now owned and operated by the city of San Angelo. After you check in at the visitor's center, you... More

We went on a Sunday, 3/12/17. It opened at 1:00 pm. When we got there the Office/Gift Shop was not opened yet, however a nice gentlemen that was dressed in period costume came from across the "parade" area to help us. He said the volunteer must not have shown up to open the office. He was very nice and helpful.... More

My wife and I have visited many old forts and this one was nicely preserved. The displays were interesting and you can tell that they take good care of their displays. Not all of the buildings are open, but you have more than enough to look at to get the feel for that time period. The telephone museum was a... More

Was treated to a guided tour of the armory by a Navy vet who explained the use of cannons in battle very well. The fort has multiple buildings that demonstrate how the soldiers and officers lived. Took About 1.5 hours to listen to the presentation and view the complex.
