I come here all the time with friends, family, or by myself. There are always at least a few people around, older people, families, college students... People frequently bring their dogs, but they are always on a leash. It's a great place for a nice walk or a bike ride. The azaleas are beautiful in the springtime, and the trails smell fantastic. Nearby are several other trails, Pecan Park, and the Ag pond. The art installations change periodically and are always interesting to look at!

The gardens are lovely. The variety of plants is quite impressive. There are paved trails which makes it easy for those with mobility issues to enjoy the gardens.
Thr only issue we had was finding the entrance. It is very narrow and not well sign posted.

At practically any time of the year in temperate-to-steamy Nac, this is a wonderful, peaceful, natural retreat. A gorgeous walk through magnificent dense greenery. When the azaleas are in bloom, it's jaw-dropping. This seems to be happening earlier and earlier--I think they peaked around the end of February this year. Whenever you come, linger to enjoy the marvelous public art provided by Sculpture For All--about a dozen delightfully varied pieces as beautiful as they are surprising. Until 2019 the one that will pull you up short and have you pulling out your camera phone is "Message to Mankind"--really stunning especially in this gorgeous verdant setting.

Absolutely gorgeous when all the azaleas are blooming in the spring. Can't recommend it highly enough....but make sure you check with the SFA Gardens folks before you visit because the azalea bloom dates vary from year to year depending on the length and severity of the winter weather. You will have about a two-week period when the viewing is best.

Walking through this garden visiting from out of town, you could tell that this garden has seen better days and has not been very well kept for some time now

We enjoyed our stroll through the Azalea Garden on the Stephen F. Austin State University Campus. I wish we could return in about 10 days as we were a little early in the season.

Unfortunately we were a bit early for peak azalea bloom. Only about 10% were in bloom but it will be spectacular in 2-3 wks. The trails are easy, flat, meandering. There are many species of Japanese maples that must be something to see in the fall. The plants and trees were well marked. The scattered pieces of art were odd. There is a small parking area and port-a-johns. No entrance fee.

After a relaxing lunch this is the perfect spot to work off any naughty selections while being outdoors. This garden is chalked full of benches to stop and rest. Or swinging benches for a stroll down memory lane. It is free & gorgeous!

This is a lovely place with a huge variety of azaleas. There is no charge for admission. The best time to visit would be mid March to early April. Spring in Nacogdoches is a wonderful time with many blooming trees. It is definitely worth visiting.

Are dogs allowed to walk with owners in the garden?
Written 22 March 2019
The gardens are on the campus of SFA. I called the Campus Police and they told me that dogs are allowed as long as they are on a leash.

Hi, Linda. What would you like to know about this attraction? Do you offer golf cart tours for the elderly?
Written 15 May 2017
To inquire about a golf cart tour, please visit the Sculpture for All web site and click on "Contact" to send an email to the organizers of the sculpture exhibit that's in the garden. Apparently they have been able to organize something like this in the past with the support of the University Police Department.

On Sunday, April 9, 2000, Stephen F. Austin State University and the SFA Mast Arboretum officially dedicated the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden at a reception for the garden’s major benefactor, Mrs. Dorothy Mize Wisely and members of her family. The Garden is named the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden to honor Mrs. Wisely’s mother.
Her start-up gift and now an endowment guarantee a showcase
for years to come. Named after her mother Ruby M. Mize, an avid gardener and lover of beauty. For Dottie – for her
two daughters, Susan and Debbie, their husbands, Mike and David, respectively, for W.T. May, Ruby Mize’s brother and for the rest of the family, it is a living legacy to Ruby Mize.

I will be in the area May 28, 2016. Does the garden typically have plenty of nice plants and flowers to make it an enjoyable visit?
Written 4 May 2016
Call me a NAC and garden lover. Regardless of blooms or no blooms the garden is extremely peaceful and always beautiful. There are times where all one can see is green and other times you may see many blooms. The plants are seasonal but you may see a few "stragglers" hanging on in late May. Once again, a very nice piece of nature to visit.

When is the best time to come to see the Azaleas in bloom?
Is there a restaurant aon site?
Written 2 September 2015
This past March, the Azalea Trail was listed on the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau calendar the entire month but there were a lot of azalea trail-related activities listed at the end of the month. It's really hard to say when the best time will be next spring because the weather is such a factor when it comes to bloom time. There is no restaurant at the Azalea gardens but they are located in the heart of Nacogdoches and within minutes of many restaurants, both chain and local.

When is the best time of the year to see the Azaleas? I am trying to plan a trip for my Senior Activites group . Thanks
Written 2 September 2015
I would think mid March would be the best time. Of course they were not blooming when we were there but the sun garden had tons of blooming flowers ! We loved the shade garden and statuary gardens best.
