This Historic Cemetery in Nacogdoches is well preserved and maintained. The oldest section is nearest Lanana Street which contains burials of Texas Notable Greats, including Haden Edwards (Empresario in the area in the 1820's). The Fredonian Rebellion (December 21, 1826 – January 23, 1827) was the first attempt by Anglo settlers in Texas to secede from Mexico - these settlers, led by Empresario Haden Edwards, declared independence from Mexican Texas and created the Republic of Fredonia near Nacogdoches.
Located near the rear of the cemetery is a covered shelter with historic information plaques and also a directory of burials, directing the visitor to burial locations.

I do not know if there are any guided tours of the cemetery or not, but my friend just went one afternoon. We spent a couple of hours looking for, and at, tombstones from the days of Texas Independence. Very interesting to see the tombstones/monuments of people involved in Texas fight for independence. Fairly well kept cemetery but no place for water if you go on a hot day so take your own - there is little shade.

Several signers of the Tx Declaration of Independence are buried here, first secretary of war, Texas first millionaire, and many more. Make sure you either read ahead of time the history or pick up some info at the visitors center so you know what you are looking at. Very interesting place with so many of our early leaders and settlers buried here. Takes about 1.5 hours to walk around and see the highlights.

For those who like knocking about historic cemeteries, Oak Grove is well worth a visit. Some distinguished figures of Texas history are buried in the cemetery, including Thomas Jefferson Rusk, who was Sam Houston's secretary of war, and signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence John S. Roberts and William Clark.
On a nice fall day like the one on which I recently toured the cemetery, the walk from the old downtown square out to the cemetery was in itself wonderful. It leads you through the historic district downtown into some of the older neighborhoods of this old Texas city, with their attractive, well-maintained old houses.
I can imagine that when the huge magnolias in Oak Grove are in bloom, the place would be a delight to visit, with the fragrance of the magnolia blossoms filling the air. Also well worth seeing (it's not open for visitors, but can be viewed from the outside) is the historic Zion Hill church across the street from Oak Grove on the corner of Lanana and Bois d'Arc streets. The helpful, friendly folks at the town's visitor center told us that the church has recently been purchased by the city and is being restored, and will be open as an historic site when the restoration is completed. The church was designed by a noted early Nacogdoches architect Diedrich Rulfs, who designed many of the city's historic structures, and who is buried at Oak Grove.

There are a number of important historical figures buried here at this old cemetery in Nacogdoches. You can get a numbered guide to burial plots at the visitor's center. The cemetery is right near downtown. Four signers of the TX Declaration of Independence are buried here, as well as many other interesting characters.
However, I was a bit disappointed by the upkeep of the grounds. A lot of overgrown grass, faded or dead flowers, some headstones tipped over. This needs to be corrected and kept up with. Such a historical property should not be kept defaced or in below average maintenance.
I do highly recommend a visit to this cemetery based upon its historical value and the beautiful old trees.

It was interesting to see the old graves. The cemetery needs a little love. Grass was cut and it was easy to walk around the graves.

Pretty cool history to walk around and learn about the area. Teenagers were excited to just get out and walk. They also enjoy history too.
