Old University Building
4.5
About
It is the only original building of a university chartered by the Republic of Texas still standing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been in continuous use for school purposes except for two years during and after the Civil War. The building was then used as a hospital and quarters for Confederate soldiers. Now it is a museum and contains period furnishings and artifacts from its earlier days.

Great place for historical context of early Texas. One of the only buildings commissioned by the Republic of Texas for higher education still on its original location. Now a museum. Very limited hours so plan wisely.

Beautiful building and wonderfully maintained. The docent was welcoming and knowledgeable. Easy to walk to from downtown and should be included in your walking tour of the town. Enjoyable!

Small building but rich history to learn. Upper floor with exhibits. Long stairway up - not wheelchair accessible.

We could not go in despite arriving before closing, since docent closed early and would not admit us. Really spoiled it after walking over and finally finding the building. It is a sort of standard building from outside, somewhat behind an elementary school, so without entry not worth the trouble.

The Old University building is a great place to see what the college experience was like in the 1800's. Half of the upstairs is a homage to when the building was used as a hospital during the war as well. Really interesting and the docent was charming and well versed in the history of the building.

Another great place to visit while you are in Nacogdoches. The two people who were hosting the day were very knowledgeable of all the items on display and the overall history of the building. No charge and lots of information.

Going back to the original university days of Nacogdoches, see what it was like to attend college in the mid to late 1800s. This building is well preserved, and is very impressive. They have rooms set up like they would be when the building was in use for education, and have some great pieces of history both from the University and the area inside. It's fascinating history in a stunning building, and it's free!

It is worth driving to or walking over from the Fredonia Hotel to see this building. It is bordered on the east by Mound Street, which was built along a row of old Indian mounds, only one of which is still intact, in a front yard.
