About
Built circa 1830's this wood-frame house is interpreted to the 1840 to 1860 time period when the Blackburn family lived there. The house is the second oldest structure still standing on its original site in Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas.

We had a guided tour with a very knowledgeable young lady. The "stranger room" was very intriguing to me. She pointed out that back then, if a woman was widowed, there were precious few options for her to make a living for her family. Taking in strangers (since there were no inns or hotels) was one viable source of income. That would be very scary today!

We visited here on our way out of town and wound up staying for at least 1-1/2 hours as we enjoyed visiting with the docent there. Since we were the only ones there, she took us around the whole property, giving us little historical tidbits. I don't know her name but she seemed to enjoy history a lot and the stories involved in this house. She really made it interesting!

If you want to get a sense of how people lived, visit their homes. As you are being shown this house try to imagine what it would be like living there before the Civil War. Look closely at the gardens and imagine how their food was acquired, prepared, stored, etc. This is a simple structure yet there is a great deal to see here if you open your minds eye. I loved the house.

The house is not terribly impressive, it is afterall a frontier type place, but the museum is probably worth the visit since it tends ot summarize local history. The docent was nice enough but seemed to not know very much.

We visited this beautiful place with a group of young children to help clean up the garden (Big Serve). We were welcomed by a very nice lady. The children really liked the garden!

The second oldest home in Nac Texas and the little bit of land it sits on is only a small part of what was once a large and thriving farm. The preservation of this property is great and the knowledge of the workers is exceptional. The visitor center on the grounds has a lot of reading about the former owners and offers a great timeline of Texas. It is still a working farm near the downtown district that has a sugarcane festival in January thanks to the cane grown on the property. If you like old history this is another great place to start.

Showed up with forty visitors and a person offered to take us on the tour. She was exceptionally knowledgeable and interesting. Could even go up into the attic and down into the first wine cellar of the area. And, the visit was free. In fact, most of the activities in this town are free and well worth a trip.

This home also had an abundance of facts tied in with the history of the city. The tour began in the museum building on the property which held a wealth of information displayed in chronological order around the room. From the museum we walked to the house and gardens which were also quite interesting.

I toured the property before it opened. The home is modeled to match the time my Great-Great Uncle lived there. They asked me for info of the family.
