Me and my partner stopped on our way back to our place to see the gardens. I really liked them and I happily paid the £2.50 to help them keep the place in good shape. To be surrounded by trees and little birds it was...More

We just spent a few days on beautiful Colonsay. I was looking forward to seeing the garden and eating at the cafe. Both were a disappointment. The food in the cafe was underwhelming. No butter on the sandwich and no dressing on the few pathetic...More

We turned up at the gardens with an hour of opening time left to find the whole place closed. Apparently there hadn't been many visitors earlier so whoever was in charge had decided to shut up shop early and go home. Another disappointed couple arrived...More

Lovely mixture of cultivated and natural gardens and woods. Wander around the inner gardens, then take a stroll through the outer gardens and woodlands. If you manage to walk around all the gardens you will feel you have no guilt about that cup of tea...More

When you're walking around the garden it's difficult to remember you're on a Hebridean island. Argyll's warm and damp climate makes for lush vegetation. Colonsay House Gardens cover a large site and although much of it is woodland, there are still plenty of flower gardens....More

An excellent change of scene for Colonsay visitors. The garden is a dynamic contrast to the rest of the isle. This is our 7th visit and it gets better. The new tables in the shaded areas gives some privacy as well as some protection from...More

We visited Colonsay House on a fairly damp warm misty day - however it added to the atmosphere and did not retract from the visit. The tearoom was excellent - a bit like lumch in a friends large garden shed. Excellent small menu, home made...More

The woodland garden, with many different trails, is open every day but the gardens close to the house are only open to the public on some afternoons and at specific times of the year. You have to pay £2.50 to enter the latter. Some of...More

We took a long walk through the gardens, woods, and grounds of Colonsay House, using the map provided in the café, and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and flowing stream surrounded by many trees and ferns. We saw some roses and hydrangeas, but unfortunately for us...More

No. It is at least 15 minutes by car and I don't think there is any public transport on the island. However, locals are very friendly and the island is essentially crime-free so you could always try hitch-hiking.
