We did the "Expedition exploring the rainforest (3 days / 2 nights)" tour and it was amazing, the nature in the Parque National Laguna del Tigre and around the Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas is just amazing. We loved the different activities, the trekking and to stay at the lodge itself: the staff is so lovely, the rooms are simple and big but with a lot of nice details (depending in which „animal“ room you are located…) and the food is just delicious! Our guides Cornelio (bilingual, primary English for us) and Romulo (Spanish) were great, these guys know the flora and fauna at this national park and they have passion for it, a lot of passion! We thank the whole team at Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas for three great days and absolutely recommend to go there.

When you visit a remote biological station you expect spartan accommodations; that’s NOT the case here. We came for four days because of the birds. We saw many, including the signature Agami Heron, but this is truly a nice, comfortable place just to escape to. The rooms are spacious and well designed, with plenty of storage space and large bathrooms. The food was varied and well prepared. The staff was uniformly pleasant and helpful. That you get to search for wildlife in a boat where the wildlife is habituated to boats is a plus - they’re easy to photograph. Once we cut the engine, the Agami Heron just kept on fishing, ignoring us. The ride out from Flores to Paso Caballos was surprisingly birdy - we saw six Laughing Falcons on the way and the guide was helpful is stopping regularly for photographs or to inspect flocks of birds. Because the road/trail to Waka Peru (a barely restored ruin) was muddy and long, I wouldn't recommend it except in the dry season. That said, we did find a Fer-de-Lance (Barba Amarilla) curled up asleep at the side of the road, my first ever in years of looking.

We spent a weekend here (arrived Friday pm, left Sunday pm) and it was magical. Yes, it takes a while to get there (2 hours by car from Flores and then 20 minutes by boat) but it is well worth it. The setting, the staff, the accommodation are all first class, and the guides are superb. We did some marvellous walks and boat trips and saw over 40 different species of birds, plus howler and spider monkeys, an anteater, crocodile, the list goes on. It is not a cheap place to stay but worth every penny. A previous review criticised the payment arrangements. That has now been fixed and payments are made to Las Guacamayas bank account.

There is apparently one person in the entire park that handles staying in the Park and the birding tour guides. That’s fishy right there. We’re talking about a park that size of the state of Nevada. So this one person’s name is Cornelio Chable. ONE PERSON only. The private number on the website and on other places including tripadvisor and Lonely Planet. .So in order to book a lodge at the preserve and guided birding trips, you got one dude on behalf of a government facility that handles tourists all over the world? What kind of operation is this? Mr Chable tried to get me to wire money to his bank and refused to take credit cards, but claims to represent Estacion Biologica Las Guacamays and does the booking and says, well yes we take credit cards. But the reality is he wouldn’t take my credit card no matter even though I told him that’s how I wanted to pay for it. On top of all of this nonsense, he was trying to charge me DOUBLE for what it cost on the website which was 2400Q for two nights with meals and guides but 4800Q for ONE night! Can we say, scam? Yes. We. Can. So the upshot is can a tourist verify if this is legit? Well, not exactly. But heck, just wires him the money to his bank, no problemo. I’ve been in Antiqua for over a month now and I can tell you, that yes, the businesses prefer Quetzales. but will take credit cards. They will want to add a surcharge for using it. OK, fine, I understand that. But this guy, who probably runs a one-man “travel agency,” has some kind of scam going trying to get you to wire money from your bank to his. That's just nuts. No traveler in his/her right mind would do that. You won’t be protected if something goes wrong. Because I was not going with his program of wiring a ton of Quetzales to his personal bank account, Mr. Cornelio decided to book with another person. I guess there are suckers every minute, right? I saved the copy of the text messages between me and Cornelio and how he tried to get me to wire money directly to his bank. No legitimate organization, especially to a biological preserve, does business this way. Tourists want to put their trip on a card, not wire money. What if something goes wrong like he keeps all of it, or whatever? There is no protection. DO NOT book with him. Just stay nearby the preserve and hire a birding guide (most hotels will have referrals) and go to the preserve inside. Until Estacion Biologica Las Guacamays gets their act together and has a legitimate travel agency with a decent website, not some amateur website and private numbers where you can book online like most other real travel agencies do, no tourist should consider staying there. You can still enjoy all the wildlife but just drive into the park instead. Total scam in my opinion!!! If interested in the copy of our messages please PM.

What an amazing adventure. A long bumpy ride to get there, but we birded the whole way, with about 50 species seen. Then a 15-minute boat ride to arrive at this jungle paradise. We had two guides - one excellent birder with little English, and one interpreter who was also a decent birder. We even went out at night on the boat, in total darkness save for our spotlight, and found a Potoo! Several species at hummingbird feeders on the deck were constant entertainment. The accommodations were spacious with a screened deck overlooking the river and wetlands. This is a trip I will never forget. Worth the price.
