Tikal is breathtakingly beautiful. To think that ancient people built those pyramids in the jungle with mostly hard work, good knowledge of physics and natural resources is humbling. The place is wondrous, magical, serene and extraordinary. I do not know why it is not one of the wonders of the world. It tops several places I know are on that list. …

small site, but the hike to it is kinda' nice. there is a circle-hike around the peninsula and you can go Tayazal, the Mirador and the Beach in a morning.

On the peninsula across from Flores, this important locale is not a feature of many visitors but is well worth the visit to appreciate its importance at the time of the brutal Spanish conquest that subdued this area very late in 1697.

Unfortunately not much is left from the last Maya capital, but you can still appreciate the location and the beautiful vantage point over the lake. Today a mirador has been built where you can climb on for panoramic views over the lake and Flores.

Tayazal was about the last Maya capital, built by refugees when Chichen Itza was distroyed by the Spanish invadors. And it was located here, on this hill of the peninsula accross Flores. There is only one Stela now, located on the former Great Square (Plaza Grande), but you will see the little hills around, overgrown by trees, that are in fact former temples and buildings. The excarvation here hast not even started, and a great work is waiting for the archeologists. Not much to see for now, but still an important location, if you find your way through the forest.
