Cool Place to See and Take Portaits

Enjoyed taking portraits there and my grandson had a blast on the car even though it was closed. Worth a stop.

Jay Gould's Atalanta Railroad Car was interesting, in that it was decked out for the extreme rich of the 1800's. It was the symbol of this man's importance in the town of Jefferson, TX back when the railroads made this little town a thriving place or commerce. It is located straight across the street from the Excelsior House Hotel. The... More

My half hour tour of the Jay Gould Train Car was well worth the $5 in admission. The train car is the story of the re-birth of Jefferson, how the town lost the train route, and the story of the richest train car that I have ever seen. There were four state rooms (bed rooms) and about two sitting rooms... More

It is always interesting to travel places like the Biltmore or Hearst Castle and see how the very rich lived; especially a century ago. Such is the case with Atalanta, the personal transport of railroad developer Jay Gould. The train car is amazing--- the attention to detail, the woodworking, the clever use of tight spaces---all the things you would imagine... More

To take a tour of this rail car, buy your tickets at the Excelsior House hotel across the street. The Excelsior House hotel website lists the tour times. Tickets are $5 to tour the rail car. The docent gave us an excellent tour of this beautiful rail car that Jay Gould and his family travelled in for months at a... More

Step back in time to see how mega-rich Jay Gould traveled by rail in the 1800's. Leaded glass windows, silver bath sink, beautiful wood interior, fascinating tiny kitchen and more. Don't miss this treasure!

The rail car has a really great story behind it, it was really amazing to step back in time and imagine what it would be like to live and travel this way.

We decided to treat my sister-in-law to a bit of East Texas. I had not been to Jefferson for about 30 years. It was a great visit. The "Railcar" is something to see. The tour was well done and informative. It must have been the "POSH" way to travel back then..Do take the tour!
