A Glimpse of History

This rail car tour lets you feel like you are stepping back in time. I has been beautifully restored with great attention to even minute details.

Very interesting that this historical item ended up in an out of the way place like Jefferson. Cool to see this bit of history here. Jefferson itself was also much more impressive than we had imagined for this part of Texas. A town who's hayday has long passed but is still showing that unique charm.

If you like history and have the time, it is well worth booking a tour of Jay Gould's restored, live-in railroad car called Atalanta. You can not go in the car on your own, you have to get your ticket and tour time at the Excelsior Hotel across the street. The guides are very good, they can tell you about... More

This is not just any old railroad car. It was honesly used by Jay Gould and his family and has been renovated very nicely. You get the opportunity to see the luxury available to a wealthy family who could afford their own train car for traveling. It has a living room, several bedrooms with sinks, a kitchen and place for... More

Had seen this a couple of years ago. We stayed at the hotel across the street, which made this event very easy. The cars were interesting and I have thought about them since.

It is incredible that this piece of history was found and is restored in Jefferson. Stepping into Atalanta allows you to see how the wealthiest traveled in the late 1800's. It will make you long for the days of fancy passenger rail travel and may make you want to grow a beard.

In the golden age of US passenger railroading this car was the personal transportation of Jay Gould and family, similar to Donald Trump's personal 757 aircraft of today. You have to buy your ticket at the hotel across the street and you are assigned a tour guide who is very knowledgeable of the history and restoration of this wonderful rail... More

So happy we were able to tour this piece of history. I was blown away on how intricate the details were and how luxurious the railroad car was.

The tour of the railroad car was really interesting. We found out a lot about Jay Gould and his family. The guide was very informative and just seeing the car and the furnishings was great.

We drove by this place and decided to stop. Glad we did! It was a very fun, informative tour. They have really tried to restore the railroad car to it's former splendor. We enjoyed the tour guides history and explanation of the functional parts of the car. Well worth the time.
