About
A one-hour tour of one of Jefferson's most historic - and haunted - locations. The Grove is an 1861 home that uniquely mirrors the history of the riverport city... and the ghost stories there go back over 100 years. The history of the home is fascinating; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Along with the history, though, you'll hear ghost stories from the owners and find out just what it's like to live in a haunted home. Come visit The Grove for a peek into Jefferson's past... and a few residents who may still be hanging around!

The people who own The Grove are wonderful and very welcoming. They take their time during tours to thoroughly explain the history of the home, the expansions and their experiences. When I was in the blue room, my stomach turned immediately; when I stepped out, I was fine...I listened from the hallway while they were in that room.
Have your camera ready as there are orbs galore and you may even spot a lady who used to live there. She walks in and out of the back, right-side of the home where there used to be a door.

This is a home. You are not touring a show place. You an towing someone's home. With that in mind be sure to make a reservation.
The owner and guide is is a writer of history and haunted history. During the tour of this amazing home he wove a beautiful tale of the house's history and occupants. Intertwined were stories of the ghosts that still walk the property making sure their home is always loved and cared for by those who enter.
This is a wonderful tour that I highly recommend.

The Grove is a beautiful historic home in Jefferson. The tour was amazing, informative, and fun. You can tell Mitchell loves the Grove and is dedicated to preserving the history and memories housed there. If you have not read his book about the Grove, I’d highly recommend! We didn’t experience any paranormal although I did feel a little “strange” while standing in the front parlor. Great stop and we’ll definitely be back to tour again!

Not much of a believer but I thought this would still be a bit fun, nice history and a tour of a historic home. The home is small and you only get to tour 4 rooms. The history was good and the owner has done his research, but the rest was not at all impressive. Literally every shop in downtown Jefferson had more of a spooky, historic feel.

We had the opportunity to visit The Grove, a historic tour home in Jefferson, Texas that was built in 1861. On September 28, 2005, The Grove was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Grove is often referred to “as the most haunted house in Texas.” Author Mitchel Whitington along with his wife Tami are the current and only the 8th owners of the Grove. They have a deep love and respect of this property that is evident to everyone that visits. They are continuously researching the history of Jefferson, Texas along with the history of the Grove. The tour is very interesting and full of facts and surprises. The scheduled tours are on weekends and other times may be arranged by appointment. The tours last about one hour but may take longer if the group has many questions. We strongly suggest checking the website and calling ahead to confirm the tour times. Travel Safe_JAGIN

The owner of this house has done his research to learn the history of his home, and he is a master storyteller. The house is lovely, and every room has its own tale, whether that be the contents of the room or the ghosts that inhabit that part of the location. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Jefferson.

Visiting The Grove was a treat! The owner of the house is not only an author of several books and great story teller, but he's approachable, likeable, great host. We're ghost hunters and I was thrilled to see thru my lens a bright blue orb slowly circle his leg and follow him to another room. I highly recommend it.

I can't add anymore that anyone else hasn't already said.. The tour given by the owner of his own house was far more then I was expecting. The $6 charge per person is well, well worth the time.. The story Mitchel tells of the history of the house and the paranormal observations were great... We will go back again!

My family of four visited The Grove today. The owner and tour guide, Mitchel, is a gifted storyteller. We found his stories about the home's previous owners, sprinkled with facts about Jefferson's history, to be fascinating. He shared tons of examples of otherworldly experiences that had happened in his 1860 home. You can't miss this tour!

Excellent tour of a historic house, Mitchell is a great story teller, loaded with interesting facts, and a ton of research. This was not a haunted house tour that one would expect, it was a combination tour of this great old house, and excellent research and real ghost stories by the owners. Highly recommend that if you're in Jefferson, you stop by here. Best $6 you'll spend in Jefferson.

Open Saturday and sunday? Hours?
Written 8 August 2019
Hello, and thanks for your question about The Grove! Most weekends there is a tour at 2pm on Saturday, and another at 11am on Sunday. Reservations are required; this is an 1861 home where a few of the rooms are small, so we have to cut the # of people off at a point where it's not uncomfortably crowded for our guests. We recommend that you call in advance of your trip to verify the tour times. This weekend, for example, we won't be having our Saturday tour because we are volunteering at a museum event being held here in town. Thanks again for contacting us, and we hope to see you at The Grove!

We recommend the tour for ages 10 and above, not because of the ghost stories, but because of the history. Adults LOVE the history of the house, which include a few love stories, but kids can get bored and restless during that half of the tour. The ghost stories aren't frightening at all, though.

Will this your be okay for my elderly parents who have limited mobility?
Written 12 August 2015
Hi - thanks for your question. Probably the only obstacle would be the half a dozen steps on the front of the house. There are a number of photos on our website (just Google "The Grove - Jefferson") or online where you can see them. If they can be assisted up those stairs, everything else should be okay. The tour lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes, and we spend a few minutes in every room on the tour - every room has chairs where they can sit down, however. It would basically be walking into a room, having a seat, listening to the stories there, then standing and walking the few yards to the next room and sitting back down (and so fourth a few more times).
I hope that helps!
Mitchel
