- VGrietLeuven, Belgium336 contributionsBeautiful zoo, accommodating for people and animalsWe enjoyed visiting the Houston zoo. Lots of parking nearby, beautiful cultural settings and attention for detail. Very clea n zoo and animals were well taken care for. As Houston can get quite hot , cooling fans are provided for animals and humans at certain locations. Of course for animal health, animals have the option to head inside as they prefer. (In our experience, only missed a few animals) Earlier posts about not having any shade, I disagree, the zoo has put many efforts to provide shaded areas near exhibits as much as possible. We also LOVED that you could refill you water bottles at several water points.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 September 2023
- Anne BRamona, California5 contributionsA great place to take the grandkids! We love taking our grandkids to the Zoo. We live in San Diego, so we live near one of the best zoos. We took our 3 yr old granddaughter to the Houston zoo today. A great outing! A nice variety of exhibits, fairly level which is great with a little one, and the seasonal displays added throughout add a lot of fun. Last time, the Galapagos Islands area was under construction, so today was our first time to see that exhibit. Well done!! Don’t miss the Galapagos exhibit.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 October 2023
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee3,752 contributionsNice zoo! This was a nice zoo! We came here last year while visiting for a wedding and it was a nice way to spend a spring morning. Parking was a challenge, but it was a weekend, so we expected that. The zoo has lots of nice exhibits and the animals appeared well-cared for throughout. We particularly enjoyed seeing the red pandas and elephants as they are two of our favorite animals. There was lots of shaded areas around the exhibits, which was a nice touch since it can get so hot in south Texas. If you're a member of your local zoo (Nashville for us), you may be able to get discounted tickets for the Houston Zoo. Ours were half off!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- marie bWinnipeg, Canada335 contributionsGreat day!Used the city pass. Free parking. Beautiful park that the zoo is situated in. Other reviews said it was hard to find parking, I did not find this at all. There is plenty of parking. Great grounds of the zoo, beautiful animals. It was a little bit confusing as to the layout, but managed to see everything. Must go of visiting Houston.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 December 2023
- Jemima BWellington, New Zealand5 contributionsBest time ever. We loved the Reptile houseWe were visiting from NZ, and my 11 year old was so excited to see the reptiles. She was at the Reptile house at 9:30am on the dot, for the doors to open. Fantastic range of reptiles and snakes, and we were lucky to see them more active so early. We caught Eddie the zoo keeper on his shift, and we were so pleased. He took so much time to answer all my kids curious questions, and shared so many facts and stories about working there. Was a highlight for us. The rest of the zoo was fantastic, such a great range of animals and spaces. The Galapagos area especially with the tanks and aquarium set ups. Beautiful places to just sit and stare! Highly recommend, plan for the full day.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 February 2024
- Scottishgirl52Whistler, Canada62 contributionsHouston zoo the bestWe haven't been to a zoo for years. We were in Houston for a couple of days and spent over 4 hours at the zoo. Buying tickets on line was easy. Paper maps at the gate was helpful. Impressed with the size of the zoo. A large herd of elephants. Giraffes that you could buy food to feed. Such h a wide variety of animals. The zoo was very clean. Lots of picnic spots to enjoy your own food or purchase.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024
- kantbyluvCoconut Creek, Florida207 contributionsGreat zoo lots to do and seeThe Houston zoo was a great place to visit with the kids. We were able to use our reciprocity discount on buying tickets. Tickets needed to be purchased in advance and was very easy to buy on the website. Keep in mind the price of the zoo tickets changes depending on the time that you go so peak times are higher priced so if you are not set on getting to the zoo right as it opens, you may want to plan your trip a little later in the day to save money. We ended up buying the dinosaur exhibit pass, which included unlimited carousel rides. This past cost $10 and was well worth it since carousel rides were five dollars each ride. My kids rode the carousel at least three times so we definitely got our moneys worth. My only complaint is that when my kids were on the carousel, I went in line because I knew they were going to go again and the staff told me I had to wait for my kids to get off to get in line. I had the tickets in my phone and I was waiting for them to get off by the front entrance, and was still told that I needed to get all the way out of the line even though I was not blocking anybody and it was not busy. I just thought that they could have said all of this in a gentler way since we were visiting and we didn’t know. As we were leaving, which was around 2 PM the parking lot was definitely full and there were several people waiting for spots to open up.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 March 2024
- TerryEdmond, Oklahoma4 contributionsGreat Zoo, Need Improve FoodsWe had a very good time here. So many different animals and even water creatures too. We thought the zoo was very good value since it is GIGANTIC and organized nice. I would say they need to improve their concessions and Food a bit, my pretzel seemed old and the Pepsi wasn't even cold. I found better snacks inside the Herman Park than the zoo which shouldn't be case for such a crowded and well visited city zoo. I would come back again on future trips, my 14-year daughter thought it was the BEST zoo she has ever visited and I agreeVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 April 2024
- plgarlepiedNew Orleans, Louisiana2,434 contributionsVery hard to find parkingWent today. Took almost 1 hour to find a parking spot!! Entered zoo at 12:30 & left around4:15. Lots of free water bottle refill stations & clean bathrooms. You can bring food & drink in (bag not checked) & you should as there are lots of picnic areas & food on site is crazy expensive! $16 for sandwich or burger or premade small salad. $ 8 for a large slice of pizza or small cup of granola/trail mix. The zoo was good, but be sure to arrive early for free parking (there is a lot for $30 a bit of a walk)-i would not recommend. Also, look at their $ surge tix..looked the day before & 2 at noon were way more expensive than the day OF Also, the petting zoo was awesome! & they have hand washing stations outsideVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 April 2024
- Joni PAtlanta, Georgia255 contributionsDon't miss it!Excellent zoo! The usual animals, like elephants and giraffes, are nicely displayed. There's lovely, shaded walking paths. Takes at least 2 hours to walk around. In addition to the typical animals, there's an aquarium in the Galaogos Islands exhibit! Don't miss it! Only criticism is parking lots are enormous. It would be helpful to have numbered signs or signs with different animals posted to help find your car after your zoo visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 May 2024

We came for the Zoo Lights experience over the holidays. It was much more elaborate than we were expecting - really beautiful lights, Christmas music playing, hot chocolate and other treats available for purchase. The zoo is very open with winding pathways and large trees. Tickets were rather expensive, but if you purchase online ahead of time you can get a discount, and it will save you some time by avoiding the long entry lines. Animals are tucked away and not on display during the evening. Parking was a challenge, but we eventually found a spot. This is really a wonderful way for people of all ages to get in the holiday spirit.

We had to make reservations on line and only a limited number of tickets were available for each half hour time slot. Saturday was sold out, so we went Sunday.
It is better to arrive early as the free parking fills up fast. By 10AM most spots were gone.
The zoo cost a little over $22 each for the general admission.
They had half hour entry times to keep crowds down. at 10AM it was organized and the lines were not terribly long.
The grounds are very nice with tree shaded walks so you aren’t roasting in the sun all the time.
There are maps around so you can find your way pretty well. It is possible to see the whole zoo in one day if you work on it.
The animal habitats were large and clean. The animals appeared healthy. highlights were the giraffes, elephants, big cats. Don’t miss the reptile and bug houses even if you have to wait in line a bit. They are very well done and the displays are easy to read with video screens displaying info about the animals.
It was a very pleasant place to spend a day.
yes, food was expensive, but at least some of that goes to feed the animals and maintain the park.
At the end of the day toward 4PM it was getting crowded and the lines to get into the main park were huge. There seemed to be no parking at all in the free lots late in the day.
there is a nice path around the lake which is a pleasant walk as you leave the zoo proper.

We visited the Houston zoo when my grandchildren came to visit. Going to list the positives first then the negatives. The kids enjoyed the exhibits and the animals. The carousel was a lot of fun. The zoo is laid out nicely and staff was friendly that we encountered The negatives, due to Covid you must make reservations ahead of time and the tickets are nonrefundable and non-transferable which is a big negative in my book because our day that we went it rained so it made it somewhat miserable for the first couple hours we were there. The cafe in the zoo is WAY WAY overpriced so if you go take your own food!! I can’t stress this enough. It cost us $150 for 5 adults & 3 kids under the age of 4yrs for lunch! Oh and we had to buy rain ponchos at the gift store that was over $60.
Overall we had a good time once the rain let up. The kids loved the animals and had fun and we made memories so that is what’s important. Just suggest taking food with you if possible.

Zoo Lights is a great holiday outing - expensive, but worth the cost to visit the zoo in its holiday finery. They definitely need to work on traffic control getting to the zoo, and crowd control inside the zoo, but aside from that it is grand fun to stroll through the creative and wonderfully lit spaces. Weather this year was splendid and I suspect that adds to the crowds, but still - worth the effort to attend.

Da Moosie had his first big outing of 2020. "I want to go see the Houston Zoo Lights!" he said. So off went with the Moosie in tow as we made our way to the zoo. There were only a few days remaining for the 2019 display. As we approached the entrance he got really excited and said "I can't believe I am finally here! Will we see more of my kind? (meaning moose). I told him if we are lucky we will see a moose. And little did we know that we would indeed see a moose and Moosie got to be photographed with him. Being the ham that he is, he had to be photographed in numerous settings. We had a grand time. We liked the lights as they danced to the holiday music. I don't think it was as spectacular an in previous years. But Moosie didn't seem to mind as he said "This is the best zoo light display I have ever seen", not mention the "only" one he has seen. We went after the holiday and were glad as there were fewer people and you could really enjoy the festive display. I would recommend it, and so would Moosie. It brings out the inner child. Have fun!!

We used CityPass arriving at 12.30 to be told they were closing at 4pm to host a private zoo lights event at 5pm so had about three hours and we just about made it through the exhibits. The meandering pathways make for interest but we got lost several times as there are different exits from the themed worlds. Compromises are always made in city zoos so whilst this one has a vast range of animals the spaces sometimes looked more like cages except for the innovative primates where it felt we were in the trees, gorillas, and black bears perhaps. Additionally noise sirens, and helicopters taking off from nearby hospitals reminded you despite clever landscaping that this was not some african savannah. Two new exhibits are being opened in 2020, staff we met were friendly, insightful and happy to share. There were plenty of benches, picnic areas, shaded covered areas which were handy on a showery day. 3 hours is not enough, perhaps our fault for taking google's word for the opening hours and missing the impact of the private event - we just about made every area of the park but I would suggest go straight to the back gorillas and white rhinos and work your way round. Once again CityPass could be so much more helpful to be able to revisit over the nine days rather than force march your way through these types of attractions.

A wonderful zoo for small kids and adults. Exhibits are well done,, it’s clean and a good size. We especially loves how they had different species living together. The giraffe feeding was the best (occurs twice per day) so plan for that it you can...$7 was worth it. The food was also surprisingly good.

Had a great visit. Lots of great exhibits, although some were closed (or the animals were too good at hiding). Loved the three different species of otters (a personal favorite). There are a few air conditioned exhibits that help taking a break from the heat. You have to purchase tickets online. The only drawback is the parking. Get there very early or take the train, otherwise you’ll have to pay $20 to park at the Natural History Museum and walk 10 minutes to the entrance.

We went to the zoo because we love our hometown zoo. Because of the Coronavirus, even if you are a member (which we are), you have to make a reservation online for a specific time slot as they are limiting the number of visitors who can come in so as to be able to social distance. They also have everyone going in one direction. All of the staff wore masks, as did many of the visitors, and the staff did an excellent job of guiding everyone to play by their rules.
The zoo is very well kept, with quite a few areas to shade yourself. They had an interesting dinosaur-like exhibit that is something kids would really like, but we adults enjoyed it, too. Always a fun outing.
We bought a few things in the gift shop, including a zoo t-shirt and a mask with colorful giraffes on it for a friend’s upcoming birthday as she loves giraffes. (Who doesn’t?) They have a really wonderful selection of zoo “stuff”.

We visit the zoo in each city/state we travel to. This zoo was okay. There was no real wow factor. The traffic and parking is horrible! There were limited tickets because of covid19 however, it didn’t seem that way. It was really packed. There was signage that required the wearing of masks however, there was no one to enforce it. There were animals off exhibit DURING SPRING BREAK! Why these things couldn’t wait until afterwards, I’m not sure. It’s crazy how the zoo gets to charge you full price for tickets and not have to commit to having a certain amount of exhibits open for viewing. I digress. We had an okay experience. There needs to be better signage and more maps if they aren’t going to pass out paper maps anymore. This wasn’t one of the best zoos we’ve visited.
