About
This tree-lined linear park offers a safe avenue for non-vehicular transportation. The trail is 6.5 miles long, spanning east to west from Terrapin Nature Park to the Chesapeake Heritage & Visitor Center at Kent Narrows. The trail wanders through farmlands, meadows and woods accented with ornamental trees. Flanked by park benches, the trail crosses several creeks with wooden bridges, offering a spectacular view of waterfowl and wetlands. Off street parking with trail access is available at Terrapin Nature Park, Old Love Point Park, Castle Marina Road, Chesapeake Heritage & Visitor Center and the public lots beneath the Kent Narrows US 50/301 Bridge. These lots are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Portable toilets are available year round. Pets are allowed on leash (doggie bags provided). Fees: None

Very good parking and potties at trailhead. Do walk the nature trails before starting on the Cross-Island trail. Nice views of the bay and good signage that is orienting. One of us biked and one of us walked - we especially liked the first miles through pine woods before it gets so close to Rt 301. The trail is very well used and close to a lot of other recreational and commercial activity - a point in its favor that it has been preserved. We give a high rating despite the road noise and proximity. Having such resources is very important even if they are not remote or wilderness experiences.

I was disappointed with the cross island trail. It runs closely to large roads for the majority of the trail as well as construction and an abandoned mall. It does not provide a very nice natural getaway but provides glimpses of what the island used to be before people started to pave it.

The trail also lacks maps or major signposts/labels. We had to ask a local to find out where the trail began.

My wife and I enjoyed biking both trails. The one running next to Rt 50 is the nicer one because there are not as many roads to cross and the scenery is better. Each trail is about five miles long..

Adequate parking at main trailhead. Off to the left are loop trails that are fine. They do go along water, and get very sandy so bikes are not ideal here. This is the water front portion of loop trails.
The main trail is flat, with areas of tree covering. One major street to cross, with some private drives that need to be aware of. I biked the trail, but it is multi-use. Mountain bike is better suited.

The Cross Island trail is the premier east-west passage across Kent Island. From Terrapin Park trails to Ferry Point Park, there's no better way to see, touch, smell, and feel the best of the island. It's an easy ride, but requires basic knowledge of riding on busy trails. Please stay on your side of the trail because there will be experienced riders, runners, skateboarders, and skaters passing unexpectedly. Treat it like your on an unmarked 2 lane highway and stay on your side. There are numerous access points and parking lots to access the trail. New bike riders may not be comfortable/safe during periods of heavy use. There are portapotties in several places, but could use more frequent service. At the ballfield complex, there is a great playground and bathroom. Access is easy to the library and other businesses, but there are not obvious and you may want to use GPS to find an eaterie or the like. The trail feels surprisingly remote in a few places. Bring a camera.

The Cross Island Trail starts from the Terrapin Park and will take you to the Northern part of the Island where farmland and are. You will end up at Kent Narrow. I did not use the trail except walking from the Terrapin Park and got around the Industrial Park and out to Rt. 8. It is interesting park because it is well maintain and take the visitors to various different scenic part of the Island. You can park at the Terrapin Park (like I did) or go further on Rt. 8 and park at the High School. If you like nature and biking, is is heaven for you when visiting Kent Island.
