Beautiful working government building that has been well preserved. Our tour guide Taylor was awesome. She presented a perfect mix of history, architecture, government and humor and talked loud enough so everyone could hear. Definitely a must visit. Highly recommend using the tour guide, but if you don't there is an excellent Self-tour pamphlet that does a decent job explaining the building and grounds.

We like to visit state capitol buildings whenever we visit a new state and this on was very accessible as it is right in the heart of Nashville's downtown area. Because we were there during the Christmas week, the building was closed but we explored the exterior. The building itself is magnificent, built in a Greek revival style with lots of columns, pediments and a huge steeple like structure on top . Monochromatic in color. Parking is a bit dicey as there are barricades around the building to restrict traffic (a sign of the times). But, it is worth either a ride to or a walk to the building if you are into architecture, history or art.

The Capitol building itself is beautiful and well maintained. I would highly recommend taking a guided tour. With the self-guided tour you get to see the artwork. The guided tour will provide you with the stories behind the artwork and the building- those who designed the building, the true labor and work that went into building it, the stories behind all 3 Tennessee presidents, how Nashville got its current name, why Nashville is the permanent Capitol, TN as the deciding vote in the 19th Amendment, the features of the bicentennial mall, and so much more. Whether love to learn and are passing through, new to TN, or a little ways out of school it is worth to step back in time at the TN Capitol.

We were just going in to check out the building, but was pleasantly surprised to be able to join a free tour given in the morning. She was a guide from the museum, and was there to show the state house, which is the working office of the governor as well as house and senate chambers. Got a nice history lesson of early Tennessee and Nashville. Can't beat a free tour!

One of my favorite capitols to visit. Best display of rooms and pictures and statues. A must see for kids and adults who love our states and country. The security guard was a wealth of information and took time to share thoughts. We go to a lot of capitols and this one is the best so far.

When visting Nashville, the State Capitol building is a great option when you want to get away from Broadway St. We really enjoyed the tour, the building is amazing and demonstrates some great architectures. I will say, be in shape for the walk if you are not driving. The capitol is high on a hill, which makes views of Nashville really nice. We took many photos from the balcony on the second level. Visiting the site is free as was the tour!

What a beautiful building and nice grounds in a busy area of Nashville! We certainly benefited by taking the guided tour when visiting the TN state Capitol but felt we were dropped off so the guide could go start the next tour. We felt there was more to see and hear. The building is beautiful and large but we only saw a small portion on the tour. You can do a self guided tour if you wish and there is a brochure at the information desk that will guide you. I would recommend taking the guided tour and then do the self guided brochure before you leave. As for parking, you might want to look at the maps on the internet ahead of time. Many lots or garages are for specific people or businesses, but we found a couple of large garages within walking distance of the Capitol. Just be aware of your surroundings in downtown. Glad I finally got to see this!

We walked the whole area on a Sunday; lovely outside area with great views. President Polk’s gravesite is on the campus. The outside also includes statues of President Johnson and President Jackson along with a replica of the liberty bell. The Next day we came back, and received a very nice and knowledgeable tour about the history of the building, the state and many other neat facts. We were than allowed to view some of the rooms on our own. Really, nice experience. highly recommend.

My husband and I were on a road trip and Nashville was our starting spot. I wanted to take this capitol off my list of capitols to see (only 6 left after this trip!!). The building is on a hill, so plan on walking uphill to go in it. There are two floors open to the public. There is a guided to but we choose to do a self guiding tour. It's one of the few state capitols that doesn't have the traditional dome. We were able to get into the galleries for each house. Nice time.

We took the free tour, there was just 4 of us and a very knowledgeable guide. Being from the UK we were not familiar with a lot of the history, but found the guide (sorry I cant remember his name) explained things very well. The tour lasted about 45 mins which was just right. Would definitely recommend if you are in the city.

I assume it is okay to take pictures inside the Capitol?
Written 27 March 2018
Can't recall if I took any pics. Went thru security but don't remember if we had cameras with us. Sorry I can't be more definitive on an answer.

Hi, we're students from Croatia and we're doing documentary about US Primary Elecetions. In our documentary we have some shots and sound from your tour guide but we forgot to ask his name. Can you please tell us his name?
Thank you in advance,
Cheers

Is the capitol open on Monday, March 28th? What about tours on March 28th?
Written 29 February 2016
The Capitol is open on Mondays unless that's a holiday of which I'm unaware. That Monday, the legislature will be in session with the Senate convening in their chamber at 1pm and the House convening in their chamber at 5pm. Committees will be meeting in the afternoon as well. I don't know if guided tours will be available. No public parking is available onsite but paid public parking is available nearby at the Nashville Public library downtown. The Hermitage Hotel offers an upscale restaurant and an upscale bar with the same menu and free parking for 2 hours if you eat there. That hotel is directly across the street from Legislative Plaza, which connects via a marble tunnel to the State Capitol. The Sheraton Hotel is directly across the street from Legislative Plaza as well and probably offers a similar deal for parking and lunch. Surface lots also offer paid parking. Parking is not inexpensive downtown but touring the Capitol is free and the State Museum is just across from the Capitol. Also free if you want to check it out. Guided tours of the Capitol are offered by docents from the Museum.

My son is going tomorrow for a field trip and they sent a note home today saying dress apprpriate my son told me we have to dress up is there a dresscode
Written 16 April 2015
No there is not a dress code, but one should not be required for a visitor, of any age, to the State Capitol. The Capitol is a very historic building and I hope he enjoys his visit. If he has a guide, have him ask them to show them the bullet hole in the marble stair rail.

my daughters school is taking a field trip here. Parents have to drive. Where is the best place to park
Written 7 April 2015
We parked in a covered pay structure because we were visiting more than the capitol and it was more central for us - we did a walking tour of Nashville and made a day of it - It sounds like the other answers would provide you with a better solution - the Library garage. As a matter of fact, I am going to keep that in mind for our next trip to Nashville.
We parked at: 4th & Commerce Garage
Details - Number of Spaces: 658
Hourly Rate: $1; Daily Rate: $12
Misc Rates: $1 each half hour; $10 daily max;
Address: 147 4th Ave N Nashville.
