PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY.

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

While our train ride was short (Belgrave to Menzies Creek Stations), it was beautiful. The eucalyptus and ash trees were amazing, but it was the fern trees that dazzled us. This is a steam train ride in open cars (one side provides a better view) that traverses a trestle bridge and travels through forested mountains. Fun, but a short ride.... More

Puffing Billy is an awesome day out with the little ones. Great to be able to hang out the side of the train, while soaking up the views of the ranges and valleys. Crossing old wooden bridges while seeing native birds in the skies. Do yourself a favour and visit the world famous attraction.

Went all the way to Belgrave from Flinders Street Station and Puffing Billy Railway Station is just beside Belgrave Station. I could go there myself and it was not difficult. The ride was fun and recommended to families and tourists.

I found this really hard to review. It's great to see and experience and getting to hang legs over the side is amazing. The management is appalling though. People shoving, pushing, not lining up, standing in front of those sitting so the view is obscured....not to mention the absolute prats with selfie sticks ruining every single shot others try to... Dear Melsa85 Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed hanging your legs of the side of the carriages as the train traveled along. Did a birthday luncheon trip from Belgrave - Emerald Lake return. Fabulous 'gluten free' lunch, silver service. Lovely day through fernglades and the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. Highly recommend. We were seated as a couple at table for 2 but tables for 4 were also available. Make sure you book tickets.

We took our two grandchildren on the Puffing Billy train from Belgrave up to Lakeside. We weren't sure how they would like it but we didn't need to worry - they just loved it! The day was sunny so the children were able to sit with their arms and legs outside of the carriage and enjoy the view as we... More

The Puffing Billy is an old style steam train that takes passengers through a beautiful green forest area. This is a fun little ride through some gorgeous country on a trip back through history.

A must see and do of Melbourne. I enjoyed the long ride, every bit of it as I enjoyed reading the sentimental story of the railway and its connection with the hearts and souls of people on the wall posters of the carriages. I also enjoyed knowing that every single worker of the railway are doing their work free of... More
