My daughter started riding at Talygarn at the age of 5! She has attended many pony days and loved every minute of them! It is a place where now aged 12 she loves. She has been given many opportunities to develop her riding, taking part in many competitions including showjumping, dressage and hunter trials! Talygarn is well run with friendly and knowledgeable staff. It is one of the only places that I allow my daughter to go without me as I know she is in safe hands. It has taught her that horses are not only to be ridden (the fun stuff), but that they need to be cared for and treated with respect, (mucked out, tack cleaned etc.). Yes it can be very cold and dirty there, thats the outdoors for you, but it is nothing that a pair of thermal layers and waterproof trousers can sort out! Most days during the holidays are spent at Talygarn with camp during the summer and the openday displays! If you want your child to experience riding at its best with fantastic opportunities with a healthy active lifestyle this is the place to go, but beware you may get hooked as well!!!

My daughter's experiences of Pony Days at this venue have been nothing but positive and over the years she has attended quite a few! From her first pony day as a very shy, nervous six year old she had the opportunity to develop her confidence around horses in a very engaging, fun and supportive environment. The activities were always well organised and run by qualified staff who helped my daughter to learn about the different aspects of looking after a pony (and yes mucking out, grooming and cleaning tack is part of it!) as well as taking her first steps as a rider.
Since those initial Pony Days my daughter has gone on to ride regularly and is an active member of their Pony Club. She takes part in quizzes, horse care as well as riding competitions and has made many friends along the way.
If you want your child to have fun, build confidence and learn new skills then book a Pony Day- but it could lead on to greater things!

Myself and family go here regularly for the showjumping competitions, dog shows, displays and other things.ample parking although drive carefully if you have a low car!well maintained and clean floodlit outdoor arena.clean, roomy stables and well turned out, well behaved horses and ponies that all look happy and well cared for.reasonable entry fees for competitions and all runs like clockwork.brand new, immaculate indoor arena with seating and vending machines for practicality.firendly and helpful staff.the only issue that needs work is the toilets as at the moment they are two portaloos(though again they are clean and well maintained).this isn't a problem for us who are just there to compete but I assume if you were there for the day and the weather was bad may be a bit draughty 😄

If you are trying to put your kids off wanting to own a horse, this is the place to take them, book a pony experience day and they get to muck out groom, sit in a cold wet stable on a towel, playing with horse cards for an hour, mostly playing pairs, taking it in turns to try and find a pair, not much fun when there is 15 kids taking a turn., to try and match 2 cards.
The afternoon session then consisted of them putting a bridle together in another cold stable for the next 90 minutes, a nice bit of child labour to sort out the mess the tack was in! After 4 hours of torturer they get to ride for 35 minutes, in an ill fitting hat. When I say ride I mean they get 10 minutes of walking round, about 10 minutes of standing still teaching the horse to stop, and 10 minutes of listening to the instructor tell them how to hold the reins and testing them on the colour of their horse. If they are lucky they get to trot for a quarter of the indoor arena.
Parents are encouraged to leave their children their for the day, being the type of parent that isn't too keen to abandon my child to a bunch of strangers, some as young as 7 supervising, I stayed, i was told this can be off putting to the kids, and the children whose parents weren't present were fine, or maybe they were too shy to let you know they were bored to tears?
After they have suffered this for the day, they get to watch the kids that have walked them round, mount the horses they have taken care of, and ride off on a hack, with most of the kids moaning to parents, about how that is what they wanted to do.
If ever my child is naughty and needs punishing again, I will be sending her here, it has put her off asking if she can have a horse for Christmas, and seems to have put her off even wanting to have anything to do with horses, the £20 it cost, has saved me a fortune, if ever she gets the itch again I will be sure to send her back.
PS, don't send your child with drinks, they have dirty portaloos with no toilet roll, they don't flush, and have no running water, the children are then gathered in a dirty portacabin to eat dinner, yummy!

Pony Days
In response to the review above, Pony Days are Hugely popular with many children returning regularly and we are very sorry you had a disappointing experience. Activities are geared towards the age and ability of the children and very often on pony days the children are 6 or 7 yrs old - not an age where they are able to do a great deal safely around horses. There is usually 2 groups with a maximum of 8 in a group and we arrange the day around some learning activities in the porta cabin and some hands on activities around the ponies. Rarely does an activity last more than 30 minutes as we are aware that young children lose concentration quickly. All of our hats are of current standards and fit accordingly. Because of the nature of the activity (live animals) we feel that as much supervision and help is beneficial therefore we encourage some of our clients to come along and assist our staff. All helpers have to be a minimum of 12yrs old and level 3 riders. Under no circumstances are children on a pony day treated as child labour. Most pony days include a ride in the arena and a short hack unless the weather is not suitable (which it wasn’t on that particular day) or there are not enough helpers to lead ensuring safety. Parents are very welcome to stay but most don't. On the downside I do agree that the toilets are not ideal. Unfortunately at the moment we do only have portaloos but they are filled with toilet paper and do flush, there is a cleaning company which replenishes and cleans them once a week, there is also access to running water for hand washing and all children are taken to wash their hands before lunch. My daughter is thriving at this friendly and brilliantly run stables for the past 3 years.
The horses and pony's are immaculate and well trained. This stables has high standards so be prepared to learn as it is also a BHS and Pony Club Centre.
Delighted we found Talygarn and know we will remain for long time. Thanks to all the staff and owners.

lovely place lovely horses lovely owners, lovely surroundings can be slow in sorting out the horse with riders . enjoyed going and its nice they have a in door and outdoor area.
We used to ride at another riding school but we were getting quite confused when it came to mounting the horses!
.Due to health we have not been for a while but will hopefully be back ASAP..

First time experience of an excellent display and showmanship at Talygarn. My granddaughter and I sat through a thoroughly enjoyable display of riding, jumping and vaulting, including novices and experienced riders taking part.
I just wish to thank everyone who organised this event. A lovely afternoon was filled with great entertainment, skill of horsemanship and beautifully turned out ponies and horses. CONGRATULATIONS to all.

My 10 year old son has been riding here for a month now and we are very happy. He rode at another stable previously but we got messed around quite a lot and didn't feel the instruction was great. But at Talygarn we have no complaints; my son feels he is learning a lot more and I have noticed the difference too.
The staff are very friendly and professional, the ponies are in great condition and have lovely temperaments..
The stable may be slightly more expensive than some other stables but as they don't charge extra for hats it all equals itself out.
P.S. Pick up some of their egss when you're there - they are very fresh.

I have been having private lessons for the last couple of years here. Lovely horses, staff and girls who help on the yard. I have had the chance to take part in the Dressage competitions on one of the horses Tarquin and I love it. Something I have always wanted to do, and its never too late as I am now 52.
Always plenty of activates going on, Pony Club, Jumping and Pony days and excellent vaulting team.
