About
Now open again daily without charge for self-guided visits. Visitors are asked to observe social distancing and wear a mask indoors. One of the best preserved workhouses in Britain, in a beautiful rural setting. There’s a self-guided trail round the courtyards and parts of the ground floor and a small but informative History Centre describing workhouse life and attitudes to poverty – some relevant today. You can watch a film in which the ghost of the first Master guides visitors and introduces other ghosts. Children can try on costumes, pick oakum or follow a Family Trail. The Workhouse is owned by a charitable trust and run by volunteers. Restoration is ongoing. Parts are rented to local enterprises or used for activities to raise funds: we host events from pop festivals to weddings; art exhibitions to horse shows. A 24-bed bunkhouse offers accommodation. Entry and parking are free but a donation and a comment are appreciated.

Saw the leaflet and dropped in to explore. The cafe was closed. Plenty of parking. We self-explored as they suggest and found the bookshop with it's honesty box, the art exhibition (worth a look) and the displays at the entrance area. Quiet, with a trickle of visitors. Seems to be run on a shoestring basis. Odd not to find a guide, etc. A very interesting place withfine historic buildings. It's worth reading up on the 'Dartmoor Shepherd', a cleptomaniac with an interesting career! Free entry.

We absolutely loved it here. Fascinating insight into a darker side of our history. The video of locals enacting what the workhouse might have been like was very interesting. We hadn't planned to watch it all but it was just SO good! Really hope that people support the renovations and it can be brought back to how it was all those years ago. Will sponsor a slate ASAP. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your visit, Claire, and for such an appreciative review. We're glad you enjoyed the film. Restoring such a large building is quite a challenge for a small community and the renovated spaces have to generate income, so we can't just be a museum. But we hope to extend our displays and tell more stories.

Reading the histories of some of the people who were forced to live in a workhouse was sobering. The short film was worth watching as you could relate easier to the impact on families. No one was there when we visited but it was easy to make your way around. A good way to spend an hour.

Came across this site by chance, and was delighted I did. It was unmanned, and free, but the invisible enthusiasts had put in lots of effort interpreting the site, with signage, oral history, and a charming film. I wandered all round and felt welcome

Many thanks for your appreciative review. We're glad you found your visit interesting and enjoyed the film. Our building should look even better by the spring when the Master's House has its new roof and cupola. We're a small Trust and there's still a lot to do - but people can see work in progress and we're open every day.

We pre-booked, arrived and given a brief history of the workhouse, a good film about the place and staff & inmates.
It's well worth a visit, and an ongoing project that needs our support

if you have an interest in social history a visit to the workhouse is a must. The building itself is work in progress, so don't expect a palace with all the latest mod cons.
The history about the work house is very well presented and gives a insight into the life in a workhouse, the circumstances how people fell on hard times and had to enter the workhouse.
The member of staff i spoke to was very well informed and keen to pass on his knowledge and answer my questions. There is a lot of written information, lots from the original records in hand writing from the period.

The workhouse has only been open since 2016 and has huge potential for visitors. The Video is a useful introduction and lots of historical documents. A guide would be good but we were out of season so we followed the visitor guide map. Some parts of the buildings were not open but that may have been because they were unsafe. Would really recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Many thanks for these comments. We're glad you found your visit worth while. We can't always have a volunteer present, but visitors are welcome to walk round using the trail cards and to view the displays and film in the Workhouse History Centre. Much of the ground floor is let as workshops or used for functions to raise the funds we need: the upper floors await restoration and the outcome of our Master's House Appeal.

This is in a beautiful part of Wales. Has breathtaking scenery, the locals are very friendly. Llanfyllin is full of history.
LLanfyllin Workhouse is a beautiful building. The last time I was there, was in 2017 during the summer for their annual music festival. The music caters for a wide range of people. I had an amazing time, learnt a lot about the workhouse, this place would be great for ghost hunting, it's such an old beautiful building.
The thing I love the most about my visit was how passionate the owners are concerning their love for not just the building, but of the community, very eco friendly, care about their environment.
I would defenetley go again.
