Overview
More
One of the best preserved workhouses in Britain, in a beautiful rural setting. There’s a self-guided trail round the courtyards and parts of the ground floor and a small but informative History Centre describing workhouse life and attitudes to poverty – some relevant today. You can watch a film in which the ghost of the first Master guides visitors and introduces other ghosts. Children can try on costumes, pick oakum or follow a Family Trail. The Workhouse is owned by a charitable trust and run by volunteers. Restoration is ongoing. Parts are rented to local enterprises or used for activities to raise funds: we host events from pop festivals to weddings; art exhibitions to horse shows. A 24-bed bunkhouse offers accommodation. Visitors may find the Workhouse History Centre unmanned or an event in progress but are welcome to look round, browse the bookshop, explore the grounds or picnic in the Sensory Garden. Entry and parking are free but a donation and a comment are appreciated.

It was interesting to see the place and find our about its history. The information was very informative and the video well executed. However, the yards and toilet facilities are in need of attention. It brings the place down. However, on saying this, it is...More

It's lottery funded but it seems to have been spent on a commune?! It said best preserved workhouse in Britain. It had vodka bottles hanging from the ceiling and large speakers in the main block playing whale music?! It was run down. Hoped for it...More

Thank you for taking the trouble to comment. We're sorry you were disappointed. We have to hire out our facilities to fund further restoration and a small scale pop festival was running on the weekend you visited: there's a real tension between catering for this...More

This past weekend 23 of our ladies stayed in The Workhouse bunkhouse for a weekend of rambling in the Welsh countryside. We found The Workhouse to be perfectly rustic. Good value for money, comfortable beds, good showers, big kitchen and as it was warm, lovely...More

We're glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated our rustic charm! No, people won't find luxury but hopefully a bit of character and some history. Not everyone can say they've been in the Workhouse. Thank you for coming, and for your friendly comment.
