The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

This is a small museum with a lot of soul. the people who work there are very dedicated, and it's clearly a mecca for anyone who is a metalsmith. The exhibits were thought-provoking and the apprentices in the blacksmith shop were friendly and informative. Great gift shop, too. Make sure you really look at the entrance iron gates: they are... Interesting exhibits in & out. Loved the 19th century Gazebo atop the bluff overlooking the River (awesome photo op, plan ahead.) In the blacksmith shop the story of metalworking is displayed, with demonstrations. Classes in the foundry can be observed, too. Their site, dot org will help in planning your visit. Across the street is expansive Chickasaw Park, a must-see... More

There were two interesting exhibits when we were there. One was a jewelry artist and the other was an anti-gun sculptor. Both were great. The permanent collection is fairly small. There was no one working in the shop so we didn't get to see any demos other than those on the videos. I would go again when they get new... More

This museum has both indoor and outdoor exhibits to see. I discovered it on Groupon. (Groupon has opened my eyes to many unique places to see while traveling!) We had a beautiful day and just enjoyed some quiet time strolling through. Ask about the history of the buildings; very interesting.

Interesting and informative demos. Museum and collection are fairly small. My favorite was the old coffers and padlocks, which are upstairs in the library building.

We were not really sure what to expect when we went to the metal museum but were pleasantly surprised with all the interesting metal sculptures and statues. I would recommend going down on Saturday or Sunday when they are giving demonstrations on forging and smithing metal. The demonstrations were the most interesting for me seeing some of the basic metal... More

The demonstration of metal forging and casting was very interesting and well done. The art was interesting, but the demonstration was what made our visit worthwhile.

The setting is wonderful and the exhibits are interesting. The grounds are scattered with art pieces; there are excellent demos and classes - check the website for schedules! Only negative was that the actual museum (the first building), didn't seem like much for the money, and the employee in the gift shop never spoke or looked up from her phone... More

Take the time to visit this place. There was an amazing exhibit of cloisonne work when we were there. The gates are fantastic, and much of the work is done on the grounds using "antique" methods of blacksmithing and metal work.

Unusual subject for a museum, absolutely gorgeous venue, a working facility for a lost art form. If you aren't fascinated by metalwork before you visit - you will be afterwards. Do this!
