The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

I am ashamed to say that I have lived all my life in Memphis without visiting this place. My daughter and I went last Sunday and it was a great experience. There are several buildings with different displays, some experiential such as smithy work and molding pewter work. There is a library building, with another exhibit. The site is on... More

We stopped in later in the afternoon and spent about 2 hours at the museum. Our daughters age 12 and 7 enjoyed the exhibits as well as the demonstrations. The artists doing the demonstrations were friendly and knowledgeable. If I were local, I would definitely become a frequent visitor. As an art museum, it was small enough to hold all... More

As a frequent visitor when traveling to Memphis I've longed to take advantage of one their class. The opportunity presented itself and I was pleased to take the all day intro to welding class. With only five participants there was exceptional personalized instructions from Lewis. Attention to safety and equipment was thorough and professional. As the only woman in the... More

Beautiful museum. I love the grounds for sitting at the river, probably one of the best spots in the city for that. I haven't been a few months, but the permanent exhibits are fascinating and detailed and make you temporarily want to work metal into art. Come here and see the beauty!

The A.E.Chase exhibit was very good but I expected to see more regular installations. The buildings were part of a military installation some of which appear to be for sale. The location is out of town and not easy to find but the view of the Mississippi is lovely. Good for an hour or so but don't plan your day... More

The only metal museum in the country devoted solely to metal. Beginning with the intricate gate upon entry, through the buildings, the foundry and the shop and the iron pieces on the grounds, this place is fascinating.

Who knew beautiful, lacy, jewelry, yard sculptures and my frying pans could all be created from cast iron! I was like a kid in a candy store in the inside museum! The jewelry pieces made of cast iron, before the War Between the States (otherwise known as The War) are so amazingly delicate and lacy. I think of cast iron... More

This was the second time we have visited the Metal Museum. I have also recommended it to several friends visiting the Memphis area. Not only is the metal work amazing, it sets on a lot over looking the Mississippi River, such a beautiful area.

A whimsical collection of metal work , old and new. Modern and historical. From the large gates going into area to the surrounding gardens. Historical pieces of jewelry to modern pieces.
