When you enter and pay there is a 12 minute video to watch, it was okay. Then you are given a player with headphones to use throughout the self guided tour. We really didnt feel the information added anything to our experience so we stopped using the headphones after the first few times. It was interesting but we thought it could have been paid out better, it seems there were exhibits that had nothing to do with the Rock of Memphis and would have been better displayed in a civil rights museum. Just our opinion. We were only in there about 1.5 hours tops and it is much smaller than we expected which is fine but we were expecting more since the Civil Rights museum had so much reading. You get to see costumes from the singers which is cool.

Once you enter the museum you watch a short film. Once the film is finished you are given a headset. This headset working by punching the number of the exhibit on the pad of the headset. Lots of great music and lots of interesting exhibits. The museum is just a block of Beale Street.

We toured this museum today. It was pretty good. I enjoyed it. It has a short movie at the beginning and then it is a self guided audio tour. It is well put together and the displays are well presented. The cost is 13 dollars which I suppose is about average for this type of attraction.

This music museum was excellent in both content (the social and historic context of the musicians, not just the musicians themselves) as well as delivery (self-paced audio tour). I was very engaged and learned quite a bit. I enjoyed the intro video before entering the exhibits.

Nicely fine small museum. Learned a lot of history about soul and blues music. We visited as part of the Backstage pass which covers four entry fees: this one, STAX, Sun Studio and Graceland - a good deal. We enjoyed our visit and recommend the museum.

Very good museum that explores past thru to present of the Memphis soul, rock and blues music. It is a self guided museum by either reading or listening to the audio they supply. Both are good. We did a combination of both as we wandered thru. Good presentation of the history. Worth visiting.

I am not a country music fan (my wife is) but I enjoyed this museum especially because of the music you can listen to; I even danced during the visit. Highly recommended given that there is nothing, sadly, to see in the centre of Memphis. Highly recommended.

This museum is amazing!! (It's a Smithsonian affiliate) First, there's a short informational movie, then you get a headset to do a self-guided tour. The narration is great, also includes songs. The exhibits are fantastic and there are some old fashioned juke boxes that you can pick songs to play. Definitely recommend.

Very educational. Short film to start then a self guided tour on an iPod with tons of optional songs to listen to. In looking at other reviews it looked like the tour would take an hour, but I was there for an hour and a half and still had lots of other exhibits to listen to. I especially liked how they had recordings of some very old songs to include some that modern artists have covered. Great hearing the originals.

This museum was on my “A” list. Just 1/2 block away from the foot of the pedestrian area of Beale Street and is not to be missed. The displays were designed by the Smithsonian and are excellent. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to go thru as I wanted to listen to all the commentary, plus listen to the music. There is a 15 minute film to give you background and get you in the mood for the experience. For you children of the ’50’s and’60’s it is like going home again. For those older, who remember the beginnings of the Memphis sound, it is a trip down memory lane.
I went thru once for the exhibits and commentary, and since it wasn’t crowded, they let me go thru again just to take photos.
Don’t miss this important museum!

Can I buy tickets on the day or is it better to book in advance? Thanks in advance.

It probably depends on when you go. We had no trouble in April. There is a combo with the Memphis Music Hall of Fame and it is only $5 more, I think. That is all it I worth too. Pretty small and mostly costumes. But Rock and Soul was awesome! Took us 3 hours.

There is any parking nearby?
Thank you!

There is street-metered parking along Third Street adjacent to the museum. If those are taken, the Westin Hotel operates a public parking garage directly across Third Street from the museum. Let us know if you have other question. We look forward to your visit!

Hola!
Les quería consultar si alguien ha viajado a Memphis desde Nashville en un bus llamado GREYHOUND.
Quería saber si sale desde el aeropuerto y si es una buena alternativa para llegar a Memphis desde Nashville.
Muchas gracias
Saludos

It takes most guests between 1 and 1.5 hours. However, the Smithsonian-developed exhibition includes over 300 minutes of information, and almost 100 songs which lead our guests through the evolution of Memphis' rich musical history.... so some guests have spent several hours within our galleries. We hope to have you as a guest at the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum

If you're going to use a total access pass for this, why is the credit card being charged? How will we get the cc charge canceled?

By total access plan, I assume you are referring to Memphis' "Backstage Pass" the discount combo ticket between the city's 4 most popular music attractions. By buying a "Bacjkstage Pass," and therefore making an advance purchase of your admission ticket to Graceland, Rock 'n' Soul, Sun Studio and Stax, you save over 20% and more than $17 than if you purchased your tickets separately. Even if you are going to Graceland and only 2 of the other 3 music attractions, you still save over the regular admission prices. When a "Backstage Pass" is purchased, the customer's credit card is charged just as if they purchased any admission ticket. If you have any other questions, call Rock 'n' Soul and they will put you in touch with me (Trip Advisor doesn't lime me posting my phone number). And, trust me, those 4 attractions celebrate America's music better than any other attraction(s) in the world.
