About
ANGUSalive’s Gateway to the Glens Museum is situated in Kirriemuir Town House, a building that has been at the heart of Kirriemuir since its construction in 1604. The Museum opened in 2001 after the building was carefully restored and conserved. Here at Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum, local people and visitors to the town can discover the unique atmosphere of historic Kirriemuir and the splendour of the Angus Glens. Stepping through the door, visitors experience a vivid introduction to the history, culture and natural environment of ‘Kirrie’ and the western Angus glens, with recordings of local people, computer interactives and permanent displays. Illustrated talks and children’s events complement and develop the variety of temporary displays that take place throughout the year.

A miniature museum gem in the heart of Kirriemuir. Here history, wildlife, Peter Pan and JM Barrie, and even AC/DC are displayed side by side. All the exhibits are described well and there are also free brochures with additional information. Even the history of the museum building itself is fascinating and there’s a lovely model showing how the area around it would have looked when it was first built. And there’s a charming little square in front of the museum with a statue of Peter Pan.

Called in today on our tour of Scotland. The museum was free and really worth a visit. The lady was very helpful and went above and beyond to make our visit more knowledgable. The Bon Scott collection was good and the JM Barrie part was also very interesting. Really worth a visit.

Unusually, in a rainy Kirriemuir, I was at a loose end, having parked in Bank Street ... soon to be bank-less. I had driven to town to post a larger-than-small-type card that required postmaster inspection. That done, I realised the balance of my half-hour free-to-park time might allow me a browse around the most wonderful creatively-curated museum tucked in the 'Gateway to The Glens' building ... the former 'Toon Hoose' on the High street. A fine historical landmark four-hundred-years-old pile, in tip-top order, it's an absolute treat to enter as the ladies on duty can do no more than they do to make a visitor feel welcome and unhurried. I just caught Michael Visocchi's photography exhibits and went on to admire the old town centre mock-up, once again.  My interest in paintings drew me to some recent exhibits of Old Kirrie by Ryle Smith and the Edmund Caswell works, Dave Robertson's and Bob Reid's artistic efforts. Plenty stuff on famous Kirriemarians, Sir J. M. Barrie and AC/DC's Bon Scott, Sir Hugh Munro of mountaineering interest and Charles Lyell of Kinnordy, the Giant of Geology, the musical Camerons and the Victoria Cross (can I say?) 'triplets'.  Oh, and did you know that Kirriemuir's very own Peter Hood, in the early part of the nineteenth century, invented that now redundant but (for more than a hundred and fifty years) indispensible machine ... The Typewriter?
All in all, what a charming wee museum, fit for purpose ... and more.  If you find yoursel' strolling through Kirrie ... And Many (like the great Australian writer and actor, W. S. Percy) Do ... check out this small but truly Big Attraction.

Really enjoyed our visit here. Friendly, relaxed, not crowded, and a range of interesting things to look at. Liked the Bon Scott small exhibition - hope they can raise enough money for a stutue of him in the town.

Visited this museum as part of four days in Kirriemuir revisiting the town of my childhood (now in my 70s!). The Museum assistant, Jen Faalconer was exceptional both in her welcome and enthusiasm to ensure you enjoyed your visit. This small museum has much of interest about the Town, its history and information on places to visit to keep you busy over a few days. Part of the museum is set up to celebrate the life of AC/DC front man Bon Scott who was born in Kirriemuir. On display was a class photograph of his first day at school.....and to my complete surprise I found myself on that photo. I was so excited and Jen was delighted that I was able to help with some of the names of others in the photo! She printed me a copy........and my family of boys who were all AC/DC fans are loving the connection! Thanks to all who shared in my excitement! Great wee museum!

Thank you for your review Borderlassie. We're so glad that you enjoyed your visit and are very grateful for your help with the names for Bon Scott's class photo. What a lovely surprise all round! Jen is on her holidays just now, but I'll be sure to pass on your warm words to her. We hope to see you again soon.

My fave things in the Museum are:
- the lovely staff, who are very helpful
- the diorama (look out for the cheeky bottom!)
- the local natural history exhibit (I do like a well stuffed bit of taxidermy)
The temporary exhibitions are away really interesting, and the windows outside are worth a peek too!

Wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Set in a lovely old, small building there is lots to see and plenty of interest. High focus on J M Barrie and lots on former industry and ways of life. Pleasant, friendly and helpful staff. Only moan would be dated, clumsy and clunky touchscreen system!

Liked the variety of items. It was a wee find which we didn't plan on visiting. Only popped in because it was raining! Glad we did. Staff friendly and knowledgable.
