Overview
More
Mar Lodge Estate occupies nearly 7% of the Cairngorms National Park, covers some of the most remote and scenic wild land in Scotland, including four of the five highest mountains in the UK. Within its boundaries are fine examples of classic features of a Highland landscape: remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland, juniper scrub and a part of the high Cairngorm plateau. Fifteen of the Trust's 46 Munros can be found in the Cairngorms around Mar Lodge. The estate is recognised as one of the most important nature conservation landscapes in the British Isles: over 40% of the estate is covered by national and international nature conservation designations.

After Linn O Dee, after crossing the Dee bridge, continue east on the south road. Visit the Lui Beg river. Walk through the gate and after a few hundred yards take a footpath through the heather to your left. This takes you along the river,...More

Walk was listed as 2 hours but took us much less, even though we got lost. Absolutely wonderful on a clear day along the rover. Really lovely.

On this return visit to Ballater, we simply had to drive up to Braemar and drive the lovely road to Linn of Dee and beyond. I suppose it is a gamble coming to the Highlands in Autumn or Winter, but we have been doing it...More

A little challenging to get to, but worth the journey, even if you had to double back to Braemar. It certainly is a road to nowhere, except Mar Lodge.
