About
Islay is a world-class destination in its own right, but for the Scotch whisky lover it is without rival. For those of you lucky enough to visit our wonderful island, a tour of the Bowmore Distillery is a must. It’s here, in Islay’s capital, that we’ve been making Bowmore Scotch whisky for almost two and half centuries. Rich in heritage and awash in expertise, our tours will give you a privileged insight into life behind the distillery gates, and you’ll see for yourself why so many people keep coming back to Bowmore.

- David C30 contributionsA lovely activity for a stormy afternoonDid the signature tour with Margaret (Mrs Bowmore). Listed as an hour and a quarter but we were nearly two hours, so great value. Really engaging guide, great with all the weird questions asked, followed by a fantastic tasting experience. Highly recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2023
- Alan304Cranford, New Jersey2,213 contributionsA fun tourThe grounds are relatively compact, but you can see and learn a lot on their tour. They are one of three distilleries on Islay that malt barley. You have a chance to rake the barley. The tour guides are engaging and knowledgeable. The tour was the only one of the four distillery tours we took on Islay along the water that didn’t include a photo opportunity of a white building with the distillery name in bold black letters. There are some interesting artifacts to see in the exhibit area.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023
- Bill ScurryAmsterdam, The Netherlands390 contributionsLegendary spirits and a tremendous tourI had a marvelous experience on the Bowmore distillery tour: As it happened there were no other guests so I got a bespoke walkthrough care of my guide Evy. She was on top of each aspect of the plant, got me into countless tight spaces to see new angles of their operation, and best of all she decanted some of the most devastating spirits I've ever tasted in the cask warehouse. This tour is one for the books, do not miss it.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 March 2024

The experience was led by Rob who was very knowledgeable, informative and friendly. The highlight of the experience was tasting 3 very different whiskys direct from the cask in the No 1 Vault. Rob expertly guided us through the tasting, answering all the question put to him by those on the experience. All in all we would highly recommend the experience itself which was made even better by having Robs expertise - having visited numerous distilleries on Islay this firmly remains our no 1 favourite!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2024

She gave us a very comprehensive tour of the distillery a passionate background into the distillery itself. The tasting room looking out over the water is a beautiful setting to enjoy some great whisky paired with chocolate.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 May 2024

The tour guide was interesting and the distillery is gorgeous. She showed us all aspects of the whisky making process from the barley room to the smoking room. The tastings were varied and very good and the final tasting was in their restaurant area where they even served us chocolates! Nice touch! This was one of my favorite distillery tours and I went to many!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024

I really enjoyed my tour yesterday I wanted to go on a tour and taste the whisky because i have never tried bowmore. Purchased a bottle to take home. Plus there was a nice Aston martin parked with I'm the grounds of the distillery so that was a added bonus

Silent season tour did not disappoint.
Kim led a great tour through a wonderful journey into what makes Bowmore a brilliant whiskey.
Would recommend any who visit ensure they see the Bowmore and try a dram or 7.

Not what I had expected. Quite conservative and the staff in particular wasn't so friendly compared to other distilleries.

Excellent Distillery slap bang in the middle of this small town where you can sit upstairs and sample the products of the distillation wizards looking over the bay, parking can be a problem but dont let that put you off as in the town there’s no problem.
Excellent Whiskies that won’t break the bank.

Visited as an early 60th birthday treat with my brother and son. Decided to choose Bowmore for our splurge tasting VAULTS SECRETS TOUR AND WAREHOUSE EXPERIENCE – CRAFTED WITH INTENT . Did the standard tours for Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich - but chose Bowmore for the more expensive tasting as they are the oldest whisky cellars in Scotland, and the oldest distillery on Islay. Didn't disappoint, and was my favourite of the tours. Whisky aside, I love the creativity going into sustainability - e.g. reducing the peat used by around 80%, and using excess heat from the kiln to heat the swimming pool in the leisure centre next door (which was a building donated by the distillery to the town). Alexander was an excellent host - a genuine and straightforward local bloke with a passion for his work. Tastings were wonderful - probably the best whisky I've tasted, and generous too. Can't recommend highly enough.

Very nice tasting room! They offered a complimentary dram of their 12 year expression, and I went on to sample an 18 and a 25. Both were exceptional.

What are the prices like for bottles in the shop compared to online or on the high street?
Are samples available to try (or buy)?
Thanks in advance!
Written 3 September 2018
Prices are about the same, tasting is possible in their bar and 2-3 is included in the tour. Great experience.

We did a "distillery tour" from Edinburgh, but it wasn't any of the Hebridean distilleries, it was just a loop of the highlands with a stop-off at Dewar's - not really what I was looking for, as I'm a single malt buff. The pick-up and drop-off for all those tours was the office of a company called "Rabbies". For what they did, they were pretty good - informed and articulate guides ... Just a long day with most of it on a mini-bus and, as I say, not quite what I was looking for. Went back 2 years later & hired a car, which was a much better option ...

What time are we going to be back in Edinburgh on the last day of the tour? A rough time would be great.
Thank you.
Written 12 March 2017
Going from Bowmore to Edinburgh will take something between 6,5 and 7 h. It depends on the time table for the ferry, which changed yesterday.
