Castle Leod, as some may be aware, served as the inspiration for Castle Leoch in the popular television series Outlander. My family and I had the pleasure of visiting this magnificent location and spent several delightful hours exploring the estate and its surroundings. We were granted permission with the purchase of a ticket of touring the interior of the historic castle of the Chief of Clan Mackenzie and even had the honor of meeting the Earl himself. It was truly a memorable and enriching experience.

Consult the website before visiting. It might be opened for a a few days every year. We made a pretty long drive from the Eilean Donan Castle and it was closed with no clear signs except a one that TODAY the castle is closed. After a thorough search we found the very peculiar date opening schedule.

We were staying in Strathpeffer this August and we were very keen to visit this castle. However it was shut all the time we were there.
Difficult finding any information about it.
Maybe we will try next time we are in the area.

This ancient castle is only open on a limited number of days a year. Yours are given by volunteers and by the Clan Chief himself.
Lots of interesting period artefacts and artwork.
The walk through the historic arboretum is interestingly well

I would love to have visited Castle Leod, but alas its opening times even at the peak of the season make this challenging.

Our guide stopped at this wooded lane and said we should take a walk. It was a beautiful lane with old trees and provided the view of an old spectacle Castle. The walk really makes you appreciate the surrounding fields and trees and provides a feeling of how it felt to live in this beautiful setting.

Hired a car and driver to take us from Edinburgh to the seat of the Mackenzie clan since my wife has MacKenzie heritage. Met the 5th Earl and had her photo taken with him. He was most gracious and welcoming. He autographed 2 pen and ink drawings of Castle Leod that he had done himself. The views from the castle were spectacular and there were lots of trees with character, including the sequoias in the back of the castle. It was worth adding a couple of extra days to our C.I.E. Clans and Castles tour. They are only open 25 days a year so you need to carefully plan your schedule.

We managed to visit the castle on of the public open days and were thrilled with our time there. We actually met the laird of the castle and he was very friendly and helpful with getting us started on the self-guided tour. The room-notes were very helpful and insightful, and the history of the castle and the rooms you're able to see are incredible. A slow walk through the tree garden is a must for everyone.

We visited the castle over the week-end - were greeted at the entrance by the 5th Earl, a charming person - it is only open for one long week-end a month. Definitely worth a visit as it has some amazing history and the Earl is trying to restore some of the areas that need to renovation. The sitting room has a great fireplace and paintings of the previous owners. We loved the billiards room, the dining room and the kitchen and dungeon. The grounds have some interesting very old trees. Great fun!
