Overview
More
We provide information and interpretation on the history of the Caledonian Canal, as well as an activities booking service and gift shop. Come and learn about the canal, sign up for some canoeing, whitewater rafting or canyoning, and take home some unique souvenirs made by Scottish designers and manufacturers. We have maps and information on how you can travel along the length of the Caledonian Canal, or the Great Glen Way between each of the stopping-off points, how long it will take, facilities, etc. The canal and lock gates outside our door make up the living museum which is the Caledonian Canal.

Stopped off for a soup and sandwich whilst passing through on a bike ride. The staff were welcoming and friendly, the centre was full of interesting facts about the construction of the Caledonian canal, and the soup and sandwich were lovely. My only complaint would...More

The best place to see maps and buy some souvenirs and books about the canal loch system; a real joy to also have ice cream and coffee and nick nacks available. Definitely a must to pop in here; the new modern design makes it a...More

I’ve sailed the Caledonian Canal on four previous occasions over the past twenty years and loved it, it’s been one of the best holidays ever. I returned in May to receive appalling service by the Loch keepers and a minority even rude. In particular he...More

Fort Augustus is a small town. This canal is one of the few things you can see there. I was lucky because a boat just entered the canal and I saw the bridge moving and the locks working

Had a walk round the lock staircase, saw 6 cruiser boats going into the lock and moving up the staircase, interesting to see. Toilets near the car park, but a charge of 50p! Nice stopping point, lots of little shops selling touristy stuff and plenty...More

You could sit and watch the boats make their way up the lock all day, beautiful views but just a marvel of human engineering, lots of little shops near but as well.

Good to have a short walk here at least for admiring the views, the nature or to see how it all works. I love little villages for their charm and Fort Augustus definietely has it!

This was really so interesting to see how the mechanics work of the gates that open, the pumping of the water to bring the boats to a higher level and all the tourists' excitement while watching the whole procedure. Enjoyed it thoroughly! Second time that...More

This is a little gem for those of us that are interested in how waterways opened up the transport of goods. The canal and locks were very busy when we were there and it was fun watching the boats and the workings of the locks....More
