Anyone with an interest in neolithic sites should not miss this! Interesting site just a few minutes walk from the Standing Stones of Stenness. Had someone at Maeshowe not told us about it, we would have never known about it.

Very close to the standing stones of Stenness, & only discovered 30 years ago, this should be seen as part of the overall Neolithic complex in this area. It's thought there were 14 dwellings here although four are more visible. There are central hearths &...More

A short walk from the Standing Stones of Stenness is the recently discovered village of Barnhouse. People who lived here probably built the standing stones. During the excavations, objects found were similar in age to those found at Skara Brae. Yet another amazing addition to...More

I don't know if the coach parties are told about this as it is just behind Stenness stones because it was not full of cruise ship passengers (unlike the stones themselves). Only recently discovered and partially excavated, this was for me better than skara Brae...More

This site is a short walk behind the Standing Stones of Stenness, and should be included on your visit. A small neolithic settlement with explanation boards at the site

The Barnhouse Neolithic Settlement Near the Ring of Stennes is a cluster of Neolithic building remains that were within easy walking distance of the rings and Ness. These buildings again are sophisticated and Structure Eight looks like it has a raised bench seat around the...More

The site of the village is just a short walk from the standing stones of Stenness. There isn't much to see when compared to other sites on the islands, just some low modern walls and fittings on top of the hidden originals, but it gives...More
