The Castle has been restored with great effort by the local group the organise fundraising events and Grant applications. It is on the coast of the River Clyde and looks over to Arrran the Cumbrie Isles up over to Cambleltown and the Lochs then down to Ayr and over to the Irish Sea past Alisa Craig. It is in the... Located in an amazing place, just on the Portencross' seafront. The castle dominates the place. Not far away, over the sea, you can see the Isle of Arran. The castle is not too big, well kept. We have been there in October and it was closed. You can visit it 'till Sept 25th, free entrance. Nice to take some pictures... More

We stumbled across this little-known place one day when travelling back from a trip to Kelburn Country Estate. I have seen the signposts before, but as it was a gorgeous sunny day I wanted to try something different. I am so glad we went, and there was a wedding being held in the castle on the day so it can... More

Off the main Largs Road it's an interesting place to visit. There is nothing there except for the ruined Castle but the views are worth making a detour and it's an interesting walk along to the old pier.

Portencross Castle sits on the edge of a rocky outcrop facing into the Firth of Clyde commanding views to Wee Cumbraire and Millport and out to Ailsa Craig and beyond. The views from the top are well worth the tricky climb upstairs and the short film gives loads of historical information of this former seat of the Boyd family. Entry... More

Located a bit out of the way but worth the walk especially on a nice day because the views from the roof are very nice.

By visiting the castle, you can imagine how it would be like to live in the Middle Ages, the necessity to protect your people and your goods in a huge stronhold, the importance to have links with the other areas by sailing ... the castle is well restored, but be aware there's no facilities such as a lift or toilets...... Amazing place in the West Coast of Scotland, very interesting history and is well kept, they don't charge but ask for donations only and they make a great job at keeping it clean and in good condition. The guide (a volunteer I presume?) was very helpful and knowledgeable. You can climb to the top and the views are breathtaking for... More
