We walked to the castle from East Linton and on arrival were impressed by how well kept the place was and how peaceful the castle and grounds felt. It was great to visit somewhere that was free but well maintained. Would like to have had access to a toilet and light refreshments and would have stayed longer to enjoy the... More

Hidden away is this beautifully sited ruined castle, incorporating a fortified manor. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here before her third marriage. Admission is free ....... another great Heritage Scotland site. Parking limited.

On our last day in Scotland, we were out driving on a beautiful sunny day and stumbled upon a sign to this lovely gem. The closer we got, the narrower the road seemed to get until we finally happened upon the ruins. We were pleased to find it wasn't crowded (not your typical tourist attraction) - just a few people... Took youngsters to roll eggs. A wonderful day out and a lovely place to visit. Fascinating ruins in a beautiful location on the river bank, well worth a visit. Only limited parking on a narrow road.

Normally the free entry Historic Scotland sites are small or can only be viewed externally. For Hailes castle I think the only reason why there is no fee is the restricted access (windy single track road) keeps down visitor numbers. The castle is big enough to meet the kids exploring, it's in a beautiful location on the river so would... More

A ruined castle down narrow lanes. OK to find in a car but a motorhome might find it difficult. Not much parking space when you get there. A good well signposted walk along River Tyne from East Linton. A shorter walk is to park at the lay-by picnic site on A199 at Pencraig Hill and walk down to castle via... More

An idyllic spot overlooking the river. Free entry to an amazing ruined castle. Lots of nooks and crannies. A great place to have a picnic and let the kids explore. Hide and seek would be great fun here.

tucked away on the banks of the North Tyne River is a little gem - one of those places which you feel is full of history and drama - if the stones could speak what stories they would tell. There are a few information boards but you should use your imagination to understand this lovely now tranquil spot in the... More

The ruins of Hailes Castle are set in the most beautiful spot by the banks if the River Tyne. We had the whole place to ourselves. A great place for a picnic. A very interesting place, steeped in history.
