The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

This is a brilliant steam railway going from Buckfastleigh to Totnes which all the family really enjoyed traveling on. We got off at Staverton, the mid way station to explore but there is very little there and apart from seeing the station itself is not...More

This is another one of those little known secrets I'd wish I had known about twenty years ago. A very special 86th birthday party of eight members of the same family spanning three generations were all equally gobsmacked with the whole experience of travelling by...More

Well run heritage railway running beside the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. It's a 30 minute each way journey with great views of beautiful Devon countryside. Nice to see such a wide range of age groups on the train. Staff were friendly and helpful....More

We went with a coach trip party and had a nice peas full ride on the railway. Prices of drinks were average on the train. Nice stations and we're going to look around the old vehicles but this was an extra £5.00 per person. Worth...More

We had a terrific day out on the train. The journey to Totnes is only half an hour, but it is through beautiful countryside, running alongside the River Dart and you can lean out of the windows to see the engine pulling the carriages if...More

We spent a day on the railway . It's not exactly a cheap day out but as it's run by volunteers it's well worth it. A whiff of steam is so much nicer than dirty diesel & brings back lots of memories. We did 2...More

Quite an expensive charge at £15 return but lovely old steam engines and station. 30 min return journey to Totnes, is worth leaving yourself a few hours to look around as there's some lovely galleries and places to eat, just make sure when leaving the...More

2nd time we have been and is great fun - starting out at Paignton station and finishing off at Dartmouth. Kids loved it too and very child and push chair friendly. Excellent

Not sure about play area but there is the butterfly and otter centre next to the Buckfastleigh Station or the rare breeds centre next to Totnes Station. Children and adults alike will be delighted by either of these.
