Took my grandmother and mother for a walk here in November. The abbey always looks beautiful and the ground is relatively flat for my grandmother. All the autumn colours looked beautiful and the abbey looks perfect against the harsh sky. We had lunch at the restaurant which is brilliant value for money. Huge range of food both hot and cold.... On coach trip so this destination was en route back home. Not a lot of time available but able to visit the Abbey itself which is very old, originally dating back to 1018 A.D. but fully restored in late 1800's. Lovely calm place to visit. Benedictine Monks run this Community. Many of the services open to the public. Small but... More

Thank you for your review. We are so pleased that you found it a lovely and calm place. The Gift Shop has closed and the site will house an exhibition about the Abbey, which will open in 2018. We have a shop with a large variety of products made by monks and nuns in Europe and beyond and we also... More

On our route from Plymouth to Exeter, we took a small detour to see the delightful Buckfast Abbey. As it was late afternoon in winter, we almost had the place to ourselves,We walked around the various garden areas which are probably delightful in a better season when in full bloom, and visited the beautiful church, built by the Benedictine monks... We were on a just go holiday and one of the excursions was to the abbey. We found it not as ornate as some churches we have visited. The gardens were nice and the food in the refrectory was very good.

A working monastery that is self sufficient in an amazing setting. Visited Buckfast Abbey during August 2016 the gardens were full of colour, lavender very popular with many varieties attracting wildlife. The Physic garden stocked full of plants detailing how they were used to treat certain conditions gave insight as to what it must have been like to rely on... More

This is our second stay at the Abbey for a retreat. The grounds are breathtakingly manicured and colorful. The rooms are pleasant and spacious. Perfect for quiet reflection.

Not what was I was expecting. Unfortunately it was renovated by the monks from 1907-1938, from the original in 1018 from the reign of Canute. Don't get me wrong. It's still a beautiful building with an infusion of post modern stained glass windows and architecture. The inner chapel was quietly observed with no flash phography, being the only place where... Thank you for writing your review and for your spectacular photographs. We are so pleased that you found your visit to be lovely. The Abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. It was completely rebuilt on the exact site of the original Abbey with work starting from 1907 and completed in 1938. We are pleased that... More
