Visited on Sunday 10th September 2023 and did a half-day coach trip Island tour incorporating a stop at Pleinmont Point and the restored German gun battery. We were dropped off the the Point and walked the circa 100 yards to the Battery. At the point, you have a view of both the WW2 German Naval observation tower at this point and another along the coast. After the said 100-yard walk to the battery, you get a nice opportunity to explore the gun position and trenches around it, which were used to house and feed the men who manned it during its operation. Not a great deal of information on the site and it is unmanned but worth a visit if in the area.

Amazing building restored to its former glory looking out to sea and western approaches. Set over five floors with communications, lookout points, range cards showing distances to nearby markers, this was built by Organisation Todt and ‘volunteer’ workers. The gun battery nearby received information from the tower allowing it to set down a firing pattern. Climb up the ladder to the roof for views across the surrounding land and sea. Open on Wednesday and Sunday, it is run by the Curator of the Occupation Museum. Cash only at this venue.

These impressive and somewhat frightening concrete structures are part of the Atlantic Wall that was designed to protect the French coast from allied attack. The observation towers allowed accurate triangulation of approaching ships so that the large batteries of artillery could be directed at them. It seems that Pleinmont Observation Tower is privately owned and has been restored. The opening times are restricted and it was closed when we visited. However along the coast there are other similar structures and nearby Dolman Battery gives an insight into the working and living conditions with trenches, rests rooms and a huge gun (which may not be original). Well worth a visit but note it can be extremely windy.

This is one of the best places to see just how extensive the German defences were during the Occupation. As well as the Observation tower, plotting building and gun, there are the remains of shelters, ammunition bunkers and concrete lined trenches.

Choose a dry day to explore!

The Channel Islands have many fine examples of the Atlantic Wall. These towers and the gun emplacement are excellent additions to any visit. Didn’t manage to visit when open but got a great walk around and out to tower MP4 half a kilometre away. If you have time, explore the gun emplacement and supporting bunkers and tunnels, very extensive. Need to come back to complete other sites.

Nazi observation tower on the Atlantic Wall. Open Wednesdays and Sundays. Lots to see and of course good views. Spot the machine gun post overseeing the door. Close by is a gun emplacement where you can walk round the tunnels which is open all year.

Pleinmont Tower and Dolman Battery are well-preserved and interesting. There is also a refurbished bunker and tunnels to explore. This is an educational place to visit if you are interested in the history of the island. I would recommend checking in advance to ensure the tower is open, the times are very restricted.

Its one thing to read history its another to see it and experience it . I read about the Atlantic wall and the fact that it was in the Islands but until I saw it I really didn't understand what the allies were up against

We got a bus from other end of island and after difficulty finding where the tower is we had a long uphill walk only to find it closed. Supposed to be open Wednesdays and Sundays. We were there on Sunday at 3pm and greeted with a closed sign. Not impressed by either the lack of direction signs and not being open when it was advertised.
