This smart village, with its harbour, is well worth a diversion off the N15. The coastal loop road that runs round the headland beyond the harbour provides delightful sea views before returning to the main road. Recommended.

Taking this coastal route is the best way to get from Sligo to Donegal, with wonderful ocean, lighthouse and castle views, beach walks, and good restaurants along the way.

We drove out to Mullaghmore and walked along the pier. It was a sunny afternoon and we could see Slieve League in the distance. We drove along the rocky shore and watched the wild ocean send its waves over the rock.
