Not far off the beaten path, the Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum is well worth a visit. The visit is by guided tour and is very reasonably priced. See how families lived if they could not find work elsewhere during the famine and immediately after. Our...More

Last Saturday, we tried to find out the opening hours for this museum, but their website appears to have been hacked/no longer functioning. So we looked at their Facebook page, which announced that the museum would be opening in 30 minutes. We set off on...More

My husband and I decided to stop at this museum on our way back to Nenagh from Kildare. The route is not marked well after you exit the M7 but luck had us making all the right turns. We were in Ireland October 2016 and...More

For anyone wanting to learn about the famine times this is a must see. You learn just how horrible the famine really was and the toll it took on people during those times. If those walls could talk the stories they would tell would be...More

Great value at ten euro for a family. We were given a very interesting tour of this stark old workhouse. Some fantastic work has been done restoring the currently open portion of the workhouse but this could be a world class tourist site if funded....More

A glimpse into the primitive and austere life people in the mid 1800s endured. It was better than dying in the cold, wet of Ireland, during the "potato famine" - no jobs, no money, no food, nobody to care, other than a few who built...More

No guide to take you round. Not as good as other famine museums in Ireland but worth a look at the price if you are in the area

A delightful insight into Irelands workhouse history coupled with a vast array of agricultural antiquities make this a must visit. Nestled away in beautiful south county Laois close to Aghaboe and Abbeyleix allow you to dip into county Laois's rich history and heritage
